The Lincoln Railers Cross Country teams had a
great showing on Tuesday at Jacksonville. The boys came in
first, while the girls came in second. Runners competed at
Jacksonville Community Park on a 2.9 mile course against
Taylorville, Jerseyville and Jacksonville.
Lincoln Cross Country Coach Andrew Hite said of the afternoon in
Jacksonville, "The weather was a bit warmer than we have been
having, which I think caused a few runners to labor a bit as
they were competing. Through my conversations with a few of them
it seemed that many of them could have hydrated a little better
over the last day or two.
"As usual, Chris Cherry of Taylorville finished first," said
Hite. Cherry's time was 15:20. "Lincoln's Brenden Heitzig
(second), Garret Slack (fifth), Jake Bivin (sixth), Drake
Rutledge (12th), and Jalen Franz (14th) finished in the top 15
and gave the Lincoln boys team the win," said Hite.
"On the girls' side, Becca Heitzig finished first, with Reese
McCuan in second," said Hite. Heitzig's time was 18:00 and
McCuan's time was 19:47. The final standings were close, as Hite
noted, "Taylorville had four girls finish in the top seven, but
still only managed to beat Lincoln by three points in scoring."
Hite praised his hard-working athletes. "These athletes continue
to put on good performances. We have the Apollo Conference Meet
in Charleston next Tuesday, and it would be great to carry this
momentum into the races that day."
