Mount Pulaski hosts a successful Trunk or Treat - 2020 style

A chilly fall afternoon was a perfect time for hosting the 2020 Mount Pulaski Trunk or Treat. Randy Hagenbuch counted 326 trick or treaters as he sat on the tailgate of his hunting-themed pickup truck passing out treats on Saturday.

Randy’s wife, Michelle, was the organizer of the event and she was pleased to have 17 trunks participate. Various businesses and individuals set up along Washington Street, making the entrance of the Mount Pulaski Courthouse a beautiful backdrop.

The community involvement was amazing during these Covid-19 times, noted Michelle. “We had great participation from the community in both trunks and treaters,” she said. “I would like to thank everyone for the great support. Mount Pulaski is a great community.”

Many people said it was just nice to see adults and kids want to get out of the house and do something different for a change.

Between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m. the crowd was a steady flow, starting at Jules Flower Shop trunk and moving south towards “The Bag Lady” trunk display. The crowd then headed north on the other side of the street beginning with Katie White of The Lucky Lager and ending at Moochelle’s Kid Care trunk. At both ends of the block, local law enforcement was set up, passing out candy and putting smiles on the faces of the treaters. Several kids were even dressed as police officers this year.

Other trunk participants included Pizza Man of Mount Pulaski, The Mount Pulaski Public Library, the Girl Scouts, the Mount Pulaski Methodist Church, the royalty of the 2020 Logan County Fair and D’Tails Dog Grooming.

Kelly Aylesworth of D’Tails Dog Grooming really knocked it out of the park with her DJ Kel-E boombox themed trunk that featured throwback rap music from the 90s, until a 2020 glitch occurred and the music stopped. Aylesworth billed herself as “your Halloween hip-hop DJ, droppin’ beatz at Trunk or Treat 2020!”

The girls of the Mount Pulaski Public Library were a hit dressed as the Sanderson Sisters from the movie “Hocus Pocus” and their candy went “poof” pretty quick as the crowd of children converged on them early. The women from the iconic movie, noted for lines like, “It’s just a bunch of hocus pocus” and “I smell children” cut out just a little early on their broomsticks but they will be making a return visit to Mount Pulaski on Halloween.

Winifred, Mary and Sarah will reportedly be back at the Mount Pulaski Public Library located at 320 North Washington Street on Halloween night. You can catch these ladies passing out treats on the front steps of the library. And that’s NOT just a bunch of hocus pocus.

Individual community members also took the time to decorate their trunks and add to the festivities.

Emma Aylesworth set up her “Baker” trunk filled with delicious treats. Emma was set up next to her mom, Tricia, who was "The Bag Lady."

Kristin Davis, a first grade teacher at Mount Pulaski Grade School, sat on the street with her dog Storm in front of her “Toy Story” themed trunk. Storm was dressed as a black and orange butterfly, wrapped in a Christmas blanket due to the somewhat frigid temps for October.

Davis’ future sister-in-law, Chloe Przykopanski, was set up close by with a Harry Potter themed trunk full of amazing decorations.

You can’t have Halloween without a little something frightening. Brandy Kelly set up her trunk with scary decorations to delight Halloween lovers.

The creativity and the thought process by all the trunk participants was impressive. It was truly a fun event that put tons of smiles on the faces of the kids and adults.

The community of Mount Pulaski will also host Trick or Treaters on Saturday, October 31, 2020 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.
