Obituary
Mary J. Smith, 86, passed away on
October 28, 2020, at her home surrounded by her
loving family.
Private memorial services will be held at Eminence
Christian Church, rural Atlanta, with Mr. Henry
Johnson officiating. Burial will be at Bethel
Cemetery.
Mary Jane Short was born December 10, 1933, in rural
Atlanta, the daughter of Lawrence M. and Grayce M.
Mammen Short. Mary wed Carl Smith on January 2,
1953. He survives.
Mary is also survived by her children: Gregory (Sue)
Smith, Carla (Marty) Bale, Elizabeth (Rick) Foster,
Debra (Shayne Carroll) Ball, Michael (Judy Grooms)
Smith, Tami (Rob) Tammeus, and Angelia (Ed)
Harrison; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren;
2 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister: Sue Van
Horn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 infant
siblings; and brothers: Lester, Lowell, Bob, Jim,
and Tom.

Mary attended school in Atlanta. She
was very active in her community. Carl and Mary
started the Veterans Flags that are displayed
throughout Atlanta on various holidays. She was an
active member of Eminence Christian Church and was
on the Bethel Cemetery Board. She was a member of
the Atlanta A-Team and the Flower Buds.
She had worked as the bookkeeper of the family
business, Willow Farms Dairy, and also bookkeeper at
Turner Oil and McLean FS.
She was a very good cook and loved spending time
with all of her family. She will be greatly missed
by all of us. "Fly high Mom, until we meet again
..."
Memorials may be made to Eminence Christian Church
or Atlanta Rescue Squad.
Final arrangements are entrusted with Quiram-Peasley
Funeral Home of Atlanta.
