Well, it was nearly a draw, because both of them
figured out where to go on the very first day.
But this time, Bob was first. He said that he checked out
Lincoln Daily News early on Tuesday morning while having his
morning coffee. He was pretty sure he recognized the location,
so he and Tammy hoped in the car, took a short ride and found
the three stones mentioned in the first clue.
Bob said he was quite familiar with the Depot and its history
because while it was a restaurant his mother worked there.
Martha also recognized the three stones and knew that this was
the spot where Abraham Lincoln christened our city. She recalled
her history lessons and said that in the early days the trains
were steam powered and required a fresh load of water about
every 30 miles. Lincoln hit the mark as being 30 miles between
Springfield and Bloomington, so the city had the refill station
for that stretch of the trek.
We’ll add to it saying that the railroad was the primary reason
that the city of Lincoln exists. The town of Postville was just
to the west, but the railroad was not going to veer to the west,
so a new town came to be with the intention a train station (not
this one, but the original on the other side of the tracks)
would attract people and commerce to the area.
LDN is also giving Honorable Mention to Gary Purdue. Gary is a
former Lincolnite now living in Cincinnati, Ohio. He wasn’t able
to send a selfie for obvious reasons, but he recognized the
sidewalk and train track clue that ran on Thursday.
He sent an email and noted that the last time he was at the
depot was in 1976. He came to the station to see President
Gerald Ford, who made a whistle stop in Lincoln during his
campaign.
Congratulations to all three of our super sleuths. On
Wednesday, LDN will start a new game, and we hope that you will
all play along with us.
