Heartland Community College to hold free online film screening, Q&A

 

[September 24, 2020]   Heartland Community College’s Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Department will host an online film screening of 70 Acres in Chicago: Cabrini Green on Thursday, October 1.

70 Acres in Chicago is a documentary whose story follows a community displaced by gentrification. HCC’s screening of the eye-opening film is funded by the College’s Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion initiative.

Viewing will begin at 7:00 p.m. The film’s writer/editor Catherine Crouch will introduce the film, and a Q&A with Crouch will follow the screening.

Students, staff, and the public are invited to view the film and participate in the discussion. Virtual access information can be found at https://www.heartland.

About the film:

Filmed over a period of 20 years, 70 Acres in Chicago chronicles the demolition of Chicago's Cabrini Green public housing development, the clearing of an African-American community, and the building of mixed-income communities on the valuable land where Cabrini once stood. More than a specific portrait of a single housing development, 70 Acres in Chicago illuminates the layers of socio-economic forces and the difficult questions behind urban redevelopment and gentrification taking place in cities throughout the United States today.
