Gerrit Cole struck out 13 in
seven dominant innings, Aaron Judge homered and drove in four runs,
and the New York Yankees extended their home winning streak over the
visiting Baltimore Orioles to 12 games with a 7-2 victory Tuesday
night.
Cole (1-0) recorded his 39th career double-digit strikeout game and
recorded at least seven strikeouts in his 11th straight
regular-season start, the longest stretch in team history.
Judge hit a RBI single in the fourth and blasted a three-run homer
in the eighth for the Yankees, whose home winning streak over the
Orioles is their longest against Baltimore in team history.
Rio Ruiz hit a two-run homer in the ninth for the Orioles, whose
last win at Yankee Stadium was March 31, 2019.
Red Sox 6, Rays 5 (12 innings)
J.D. Martinez hit a game-winning, two-run double with two outs in
the bottom of the 12th inning as Boston beat visiting Tampa Bay.
Phillips Valdez (1-0) earned the win in relief. Ryan Thompson (1-1)
took the loss. With two outs in the 12th, Thompson hit Alex Verdugo
with a pitch before a wild pitch advanced Hunter Renfroe and Verdugo
into scoring position for Martinez.
Arozarena gave the Rays, who dropped their third straight game, a
5-4 lead in the top of the 12th with an RBI groundout. The Red Sox
and Rays each scored a run in the 11th after Boston tied the game in
the ninth on Christian Vazquez's solo homer.
Diamondbacks 10, Rockies 8 (13 innings)
Stephen Vogt homered in the seventh inning and hit a tiebreaking
single in the 13th inning, Christian Walker also went deep, and
Arizona outscored Colorado in Denver.
Ryan McMahon hit three solo homers and a double and drove in four
runs, and Dom Nunez and Sam Hilliard also went deep for Colorado on
a cold night at Coors Field.
Ketel Marte had three hits, Asdrubal Cabrera had two hits and Matt
Peacock (1-0) pitched the last three innings to get the win in his
big-league debut for the Diamondbacks. The start of the game was
delayed 50 minutes due to the weather.
White Sox 10, Mariners 4
Zack Collins, Luis Robert and Jose Abreu hit home runs -- all with
runners on base -- as Chicago defeated host Seattle.
Right-hander Lucas Giolito (1-0) struck out 10 in 5 1/3 innings for
the White Sox, who have won the first two games of the series.
Mariners left-hander James Paxton, making his first start of the
season, left after 1 1/3 innings with what the team later described
as left elbow discomfort.
Rangers 7, Blue Jays 4
Hot-hitting Nate Lowe clubbed two of Texas' four homers and had four
RBIs as the Rangers cruised to a victory over Toronto at Arlington,
Texas.
Ronald Guzman and Jonah Heim also went deep as Texas claimed the
second game of the three-game set after falling 6-2 on Monday.
Lowe hit a pair of two-run blasts for his third career multi-homer
game to continue his torrid start. He set a Rangers record with 14
RBIs in the season's first five games. Bo Bichette hit two solo
homers for the Blue Jays, who fell to 3-2 on their season-opening,
six-game road trip.
Brewers 4, Cubs 0
Travis Shaw hit a three-run home run four batters into the game and
Freddy Peralta pitched five strong innings as Milwaukee won at
Chicago. The Cubs managed just one hit total against three Milwaukee
pitchers and struck out 10 times.
Omar Narvaez also hit a home run as the Brewers won for the first
time since squeaking past the Minnesota Twins in their season opener
Thursday. Peralta (1-0) walked four but had eight strikeouts.
Kris Bryant had the only Cubs hit, a fourth-inning double. Javier
Baez struck out three times.
Tigers 4, Twins 3 (10 innings)
Akil Baddoo ripped a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning to lift
Detroit past visiting Minnesota.
Robbie Grossman had two hits and two RBIs for Detroit, while Niko
Goodrum supplied three hits and a run. Jeimer Candelario contributed
two hits, a run scored and an RBI for the Tigers.
Minnesota starter J.A. Happ lasted four innings, giving up one run
on three hits while walking three and striking out four.

Dodgers 5, A's 1
Clayton Kershaw beat Oakland for the first time in his career,
allowing one run on four hits over seven innings while getting homer
support from Max Muncy, Edwin Rios and Mookie Betts in Los Angeles'
road win.
Rios, Betts, Justin Turner and Austin Barnes had two hits apiece for
the Dodgers, who won their fifth straight after an Opening Day loss
at Colorado.
The A's, who got two hits and an RBI from Ramon Laureano, fell to
0-6 on their season-opening, seven-game homestand.
Padres 3, Giants 1
Victor Caratini snapped a 1-1 tie with a two-run, seventh-inning
homer, giving San Diego a victory over visiting San Francisco.
Caratini pulled a hanging slider from former Padres reliever Matt
Wisler (0-1) into the right field seats to snap a two-game San Diego
losing streak.
Padres starter Yu Darvish gave up one run on three hits and a walk
in six innings, finishing with seven strikeouts. Giants starter
Aaron Sanchez yielded a run on six hits and no walks while striking
out four in five innings.
Nationals 6, Braves 5
Juan Soto singled home the winning run with no outs in the ninth
inning and Washington opened its season with a win against visiting
Atlanta.
Victor Robles opened the ninth with a single off Will Smith (0-1)
and Trea Turner was hit on the leg by a pitch. Soto followed with a
line drive to center on a 3-0 count, scoring Robles.
Turner hit a two-run homer for undermanned Washington, which finally
began the season after four games were postponed due to a COVID-19
outbreak.
Astros 4, Angels 2
Carlos Correa's two-run homer in the ninth inning snapped a tie and
lifted Houston to a victory over Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.
Houston's Zack Greinke allowed only a two-run homer to Mike Trout in
the first inning, giving up five hits in seven innings. Angels
starter Dylan Bundy served up back-to-back homers to Kyle Tucker and
Aledmys Diaz in the second inning, but nothing else in six innings.
He struck out 10.
Ryan Pressly (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to get the win over
Angels reliever Raisel Iglesias (1-1), who gave up Correa's homer.
Mets 8, Phillies 4
Marcus Stroman pitched six strong innings, Dominic Smith and Pete
Alonso each hit a two-run home run and New York defeated host
Philadelphia.
Stroman induced 13 ground-ball outs and gave up three hits and one
run. Stroman (1-0) threw 85 pitches, struck out three and walked two
as the Mets won their first game of the season.
Didi Gregorius had two hits, including a home run, and Jean Segura
added two hits for the Phillies, who lost for the first time in five
games this season. Adam Haseley and Rhys Hoskins also contributed
two hits apiece.
Reds 14, Pirates 1
Tyler Naquin homered twice and posted a career-high seven RBIs, Wade
Miley struck out six over six scoreless innings, and Cincinnati
rolled to a fourth straight win by beating the visiting Pirates.
Naquin recorded the most single-game RBIs by a Reds player since
Scooter Gennett's 10 on June 6, 2017. Through five games with
Cincinnati, Naquin is 5-for-14 with three homers and 12 RBIs.
Miley did not allow a hit until Bryan Reynolds' double to lead off
the fourth inning while walking only one en route to his first
victory since September 2019. Pittsburgh's lone run came in the
seventh, when Phillip Evans homered for the second consecutive
night.
Cardinals 4, Marlins 2
Yadier Molina went 2-for-3 with a key RBI, leading St. Louis past
host Miami.
Molina has five RBIs in five games this season, including three in
two contests against the Marlins. Dylan Carlson slugged a solo homer
in the ninth to pad St. Louis' lead.
The Cardinals overcame an impressive pitching performance by Marlins
starter Sandy Alcantara (0-1), who tied his career high with 10
strikeouts. Alcantara went six innings and allowed two walks, four
hits and three runs (two earned).
