NHL roundup: Patrice Bergeron's hat trick propels Bruins to win

[April 07, 2021] Patrice Bergeron netted a hat trick, Brad Marchand recorded a goal and three assists and goalie Jeremy Swayman made 40 saves in his NHL debut as the Boston Bruins collected a 4-2 road win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

Boston improved to 6-0-1 against Philadelphia this season. The only blemish on the record was the Flyers' 3-2 overtime win on Monday in the first half of a back-to-back set.

The fourth-place Bruins now hold a five-point edge over both Philadelphia and the New York Rangers for the final playoff spot in the East Division.

It was Marchand's second four-point performance in three games, as he had a hat trick and an assist in the Bruins' 7-5 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. Marchand has six goals and five assists over his past five games.

Blue Jackets 4, Lightning 2

Columbus' Max Domi and Jack Roslovic each notched a goal and an assist in the Blue Jackets' 4-2 win over visiting Tampa Bay.

Fourth-line center Zac Dalpe tallied for the first time since Oct. 20, 2016 -- a span of 1,629 days -- as the Blue Jackets moved to 3-1-1 against the Lightning.

Nick Foligno scored into an empty net, and Seth Jones, Cam Atkinson, Zach Werenski and Alexandre Texier posted assists for the Blue Jackets, who won for just the second time in their last nine games (2-6-1).

Rangers 8, Penguins 4

Artemi Panarin had a goal and three assists and New York rode a four-goal first period to a blowout win over visiting Pittsburgh.

Adam Fox had a goal and two assists for the Rangers, and Colin Blackwell, Kaapo Kakko, Mika Zibanejad, Ryan Strome and Pavel Buchnevich added a goal and an assist apiece.

Rookie Alexis Lafreniere also scored his sixth goal of the year for New York, which is 3-0-1 in its past four games. Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 41 saves.

Ducks 5, Sharks 1

Anaheim pulled away with a three-goal second period, snapping a three-game losing streak by beating host San Jose.

Nicolas Deslauriers and David Backes had a goal and an assist apiece, and Adam Henrique, Max Comtois and Isac Lundestrom also scored for Anaheim. John Gibson made 34 saves in the victory.

Patrick Marleau scored the lone goal for the Sharks, whose four-game winning streak ended. San Jose goalie Martin Jones made 29 saves.

Sabers 5, Devils 3

Casey Mittelstadt scored a go-ahead goal midway into the third period to lift Buffalo past host New Jersey in Newark, N.J., extending the Sabres' point streak to five games.

Mittelstadt joined defenseman Rasmus Dahlin with a goal and an assist as the Sabres improved to 3-0-2 during their season high-tying point streak. Rasmus Asplund and blueliners Brandon Montour and Rasmus Ristolainen also tallied and Linus Ullmark finished with 27 saves.

Buffalo's Taylor Hall was scratched with the trade deadline looming on Monday. The former Hart Trophy recipient is a pending unrestricted free agent after signing a one-year, $8 million contract this past offseason.

Islanders 1, Capitals 0

Brock Nelson scored the game's only goal with 6:55 left in the third period and Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves as New York moved into a first-place tie with Washington in the East Division with a win in Uniondale, N.Y.

New York earned its third win in a row while the Capitals fell for the third time in five games (2-3-0).

It was the second 1-0 win of the season for the Islanders, who also beat the visiting Boston Bruins by that score on Jan. 18. It was the first regular-season shutout defeat for the Capitals since a 3-0 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Feb. 27, 2020, and their first 1-0 loss since they fell to the Boston Bruins on Feb. 3, 2019.

Hurricanes 5, Panthers 2

Jordan Staal's unassisted goal with 11:08 remaining broke a tie and propelled Carolina to a victory over Florida in Raleigh, N.C.

Carolina's Vincent Trocheck and Dougie Hamilton scored power-play goals. Empty-net goals from Staal with 1:40 to play and Jesper Fast with 55.8 seconds left sealed the result. Hurricanes goalie Petr Mrazek made 34 saves.

Aleksander Barkov scored both Florida goals on assists from Carter Verhaeghe provided two assists. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31 shots for the Panthers, whose six-game winning streak ended.

Predators 3, Red Wings 2 (SO)

Roman Josi recorded two regulation assists and scored the clinching goal in a shootout as Nashville pulled out a win at Detroit.

Ryan Johansen also scored in the shootout. Luke Kunin and Mikael Granlund scored the regulation goals for Nashville, which has won eight of its past nine games. Juuse Saros made 25 saves for the Predators.

Danny DeKeyser and Adam Erne scored for Detroit, and Thomas Greiss made 29 saves. Dylan Larkin and Filip Zadina came up empty in their attempts during the shootout, the Red Wings' first this season.

Blackhawks 4, Stars 2

Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat each had a goal and an assist and Kevin Lankinen made 25 saves to lead Chicago past visiting Dallas.

Kirby Dach and Dominik Kubalik also scored goals for Chicago, which snapped a two-game losing streak and won for just the second time in its past six games.

Andrew Cogliano and Radek Faksa scored goals, Blake Comeau had two assists and Jake Oettinger finished with 24 saves for Dallas. The Stars were without head coach Rick Bowness, who remains in the NHL's COVID-19 protocol after registering a positive test on Sunday in Raleigh, N.C.
