MLB roundup: Paul DeJong blasts 2 homers in Cardinals' rout

[April 20, 2021]  Paul DeJong hit a grand slam and a solo homer, and the visiting St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 12-5 on Monday.

Tommy Edman, Paul Goldschmidt and Justin Williams also homered for the Cardinals, who were shut out 2-0 in Philadelphia on Sunday.

Cardinals starter Jack Flaherty (3-0) allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits over six innings. He struck out five.

Joe Ross (1-1), who was unscored on in 11 innings coming in, was roughed up for 10 runs on eight hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Red Sox 11, White Sox 4

The Boston Red Sox jumped on Chicago White Sox ace Lucas Giolito for eight runs in the first two innings and cruised to victory in a Patriots' Day matinee at Fenway Park.

Enrique Hernandez, Alex Verdugo and J.D. Martinez each homered for the Red Sox, who earned a split of the four-game set after dropping both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday.

Luis Robert doubled in a run in the first inning to give Chicago a brief lead before Hernandez greeted Giolito (1-1) with a leadoff homer in the bottom half. Verdugo and Martinez followed with back-to-back singles before Rafael Devers singled in a run.

Giants 2, Phillies 0

Brandon Belt homered and drove in two runs to lift San Francisco past host Philadelphia.

Austin Slater added two hits for the Giants. Starting pitcher Kevin Gausman (1-0) scattered six hits in six scoreless innings. He threw 108 pitches, struck out five and walked four.

Bryce Harper led the Phillies with three hits. Chase Anderson (0-2) lasted only four innings and allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five and walking none.

Mariners 4, Dodgers 3

Jose Marmolejos and Taylor Trammell hit home runs as Seattle edged visiting Los Angeles.

Corey Seager homered for the Dodgers, who took their second consecutive defeat after an eight-game winning streak.

Mariners left-hander Justus Sheffield (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six.

Rays 4, Royals 1

Tampa Bay pitchers shut down the Kansas City offense as the Rays won on a blustery, cold night in the first game of a three-game series in Kansas City. The Royals managed just five hits.

The game-time temperature was 45 degrees, with a wind chill of 39 due to an 18-mph wind out of the north. The wind chill was in the upper 20s by the end of the game.

Starting pitcher Josh Fleming (1-1) allowed no runs on two hits in 5 1/3 innings for Tampa Bay, lowering his ERA to 0.87. He only allowed three baserunners, none past the second, and never more than one in an inning.

Brewers 3, Padres 1

Solo homers by former Padre Luis Urias, Billy McKinney and pinch hitter Tyrone Taylor tipped a pitching duel between Milwaukee's Brandon Woodruff and San Diego's Joe Musgrove in favor of the visiting Brewers.

Four Milwaukee pitchers held the Padres to two hits. Woodruff (1-0) allowed the one run on a hit and three walks with seven strikeouts in six innings, lowering his earned run average to 1.96.

Musgrove (2-2) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with a career-high 13 strikeouts in seven innings. However, two of the hits were the home runs by Urias and McKinney.

Rangers 6, Angels 4

Texas got 5 2/3 scoreless innings from Kohei Arihara and produced a five-run sixth inning en route to beating Los Angeles in Anaheim, Calif.

Arihara, in his first year in the majors after six seasons in the Japanese Pacific League, gave up just two hits, both singles by David Fletcher. He struck out six and walked two.

The Angels rallied for four runs in the seventh inning against the Texas bullpen, getting a home run from Justin Upton and RBI singles from Albert Pujols and Kurt Suzuki. Another run scored on a wild pitch.
