The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers hosted New Berlin
on Saturday and shut out the Pretzels for six innings en route
to a 9-2 win.
The Hilltoppers plated two runs in the bottom of the third
inning, scoring on an error and a wild pitch.
The big inning for the Hilltoppers occurred in the bottom of the
fifth inning, with Drew Martin doing the most damage. His bases
loaded triple landed out in centerfield and scored Clay
Aylesworth, A.J. Bailey and Evan Cooper. A sacrifice fly by
Landon Smith scored Martin from third and the Hilltoppers led
6-0 after five innings.
Bailey led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a single and
advanced to second on a passed ball. Martin doubled in Bailey to
give Mount Pulaski a 7-0 lead. After Martin stole third base, he
would come home to score on a wild pitch and it was 8-0 in favor
of Mount Pulaski. With the bases loaded Fitzpatrick drew a walk
to score the ninth run in the game. The inning ended on a
fielder’s choice, with Grant Davis out at home on the ball hit
by Aylesworth. The Hilltoppers took a 9-0 lead into the seventh
inning.
Three singles in the top of the seventh inning off Bailey
allowed the Pretzels to get on the board with two runs. Bailey
escaped further damage with a pop out to the first baseman,
Grant Davis, and a strikeout to end the game.
Mount Pulaski wins 9-2 over New Berlin.
Gavin Smith (1-0) earned the win. He threw four innings,
striking out 10 batters and issuing four walks.
A.J. Bailey earned the save in relief. Bailey tossed three
innings and allowed three hits and two runs, both earned. He
also recorded five strikeouts and one walk.
Mount Pulaski had five hits off Pretzels pitching.
Drew Martin was 2-for-3 with 4 RBIs and two runs scored. A.J.
Bailey was 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored. Evan Cooper was 1-for-4
with one run. Garrett Fitzpatrick also earned an RBI for Mount
Pulaski.
The Hilltoppers improved to 2-0 on the season.
