Mount Pulaski opened the 2021 baseball season
at Veteran’s Park last Friday and earned their first victory via
the 10-run rule.
The Hilltoppers scored four runs in the bottom of the first
inning. An RBI double by Drew Martin and an RBI single by Lucas
Kuhlman highlighted the inning. The Hilltoppers also scored two
runs on errors to take a 4-0 lead.
Armstrong got one run in the top of the second inning off
starter Drew Martin.
The Hilltoppers added seven runs in the bottom of the fifth
inning. The big play to end the game was an inside the park home
run by Landon Smith that scored three runs, giving the
Hilltoppers an 11-1 victory.
Drew Martin led Mount Pulaski at the plate with a 2-for-2
performance and one RBI. Landon Smith was 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs
and two runs scored. Grant Davis, Lucas Kuhlman and Garrett
Fitzpatrick each recorded hits for Mount Pulaski.
Drew Martin (1-0) earned the win. He tossed three innings,
striking out nine batters and allowing the lone run on no hits.
Evan Cooper worked two innings in relief to earn the save. He
recorded four strikeouts and allowed no hits and no runs.
