Groundbreaking ceremony for first veteran tiny house this Saturday

[April 23, 2021]   The Central Illinois Veterans Commission will be breaking ground for the first new home to be built and given to a local veteran on Saturday, April 24th at 1:30 p.m. The event will be held at the building location on 6th Street and College, and the community is invited to attend.

The mission of the recently created Central Illinois Veterans Commission, or CIVC, is to provide Central Illinois veterans with the tools and support systems to enable them to move forward to obtain permanent sustainable housing. The commission has partnered with 2-by-4’s For Hope out of Quincy, Illinois, a non-profit organization that has been working hard, focusing on sustainable solutions for our homeless and at-risk veterans. Working with hundreds of volunteers, they have created a new beginning of hope to veterans and their communities in the Midwest.

A 2-by-4 board signing event is also scheduled at R.P. Lumber from 8 a.m. to 12 noon on April 24th, prior to the groundbreaking ceremony. These boards will be used in the homes, sending messages of gratitude, love and hope to the veterans that will live there.

The homes are completely free to veterans, and the first one will be built in Lincoln this spring, thanks to generous donations that have been received by the community. Plans are for more of these homes to be built in Logan County in the future.
