MLB roundup: Astros silence Dodgers' bats, fans

[August 04, 2021] With fans in Los Angeles expressing their venom, the Houston Astros were able to shut out the noise as well as the Dodgers in a 3-0 victory Tuesday behind the pitching of Lance McCullers Jr.

Yordan Alvarez hit a two-run home run and Michael Brantley had an RBI as the Astros improved to 2-1 against the Dodgers this season. McCullers (9-2) pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Dodgers starter Walker Buehler (11-2) lacked efficiency but gave up just one run on five hits over six innings, with three walks and five strikeouts.

It was the first time the Astros had played at Dodger Stadium in front of fans since their 2017 cheating scandal was revealed, and 52,682 showed up. The Astros defeated the Dodgers in seven games in the 2017 World Series.

Padres 8, Athletics 1

Tommy Pham led off the game with a home run and Austin Nola tied a career high with four hits as San Diego opened a two-game interleague series in Oakland on a winning note.

Pham, Manny Machado and Trent Grishman contributed two hits apiece to a 14-hit attack for the Padres, who beat the A's for the second time in three meetings this season. Padres left-hander Blake Snell (5-4) worked five effective innings, allowing just one run. He gave up six hits and three walks while striking out six.

Pham's homer, his 12th of the season, came at the end of a nine-pitch, game-opening duel with Oakland starter Sean Manaea (8-7). Manaea yielded five runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Diamondbacks 3, Giants 1

Madison Bumgarner pitched seven strong innings to beat his former San Francisco teammates for the first time as Arizona won in Phoenix.

Bumgarner (6-6) gave up one run, six hits and one walk and struck out four while facing the Giants for the second time since departing as a free agent after the 2019 season. Asdrubal Cabrera delivered a two-run double during a three-run third inning for Arizona, which won for just the second time in 12 games against the Giants this season. Nick Ahmed and Christian Walker had two hits apiece for the Diamondbacks, who halted a three-game skid.

Curt Casali homered and Wilmer Flores and Donovan Solano had two hits apiece for San Francisco, which had a three-game winning streak halted.

Pirates 8, Brewers 5 (10 innings)

Gregory Polanco singled home the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and Bryan Reynolds drove in two more as Pittsburgh rallied past host Milwaukee.

Milwaukee wasted a dominant pitching performance by Adrian Houser, who left after 6 1/3 no-hit innings, although he walked five. Willy Adames had three hits, including a homer and a double, and Avisail Garcia also had three hits and drove in three runs for Milwaukee.

Blaine Hardy (0-1), who last pitched in the majors in 2019 with Detroit and was called up from Triple-A Nashville on Sunday, pitched the 10th and took the loss. David Bednar (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the victory.

Twins 7, Reds 5

Jorge Polanco hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to rally visiting Minnesota over Cincinnati.

Mitch Garver also had a three-run home run and two hits, and Luis Arraez added two hits for Minnesota, which won for just the fifth time in its last 17 road games.

Jonathan India homered, doubled and drove in two runs, and Eugenio Suarez and Tucker Barnhart homered for Cincinnati. Jesse Winker added two hits and an RBI for the Reds.

Marlins 5, Mets 4

Nick Neidert earned his first big-league win as host Miami beat first-place New York in a National League East matchup.

Neidert (1-1), making his 11th major league appearance, allowed three runs, three hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. Bryan De La Cruz, acquired just before last week's trade deadline, went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Alex Jackson and Isan Diaz both homered.

The Mets have lost three straight games and also lost manager Luis Rojas in this one when he was ejected prior to the seventh inning.

Mariners 4, Rays 2

Rookies Abraham Toro and Jarred Kelenic went deep and All-Star Yusei Kikuchi overcame allowing a homer on his first pitch of the game as Seattle defeated Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The Mariners improved to 6-0 against the AL East-leading Rays this season. Kikuchi (7-6) gave up two runs -- one earned -- on six hits, with two walks and five strikeouts in six innings. The only earned run the left-hander allowed came on Randy Arozarena's leadoff homer.

Right-hander Diego Castillo, acquired in a trade with the Rays last week, worked the ninth to earn his first save with the Mariners and his 15th of the season. Losing pitcher Luis Patino (2-3) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Yankees 13, Orioles 1

Luis Gil pitched six scoreless innings in his major league debut while Giancarlo Stanton homered and drove in four runs as host New York crushed Baltimore.

Stanton hit an RBI single in a five-run third and then hit a three-run homer in the fourth for a 9-0 lead that was plenty for Gil (1-0), who was summoned from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Gerrit Cole tested positive for COVID-19. Gil struck out six and walked one. The Yankees announced after the game that Gil is being sent back down to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

In his third career start, losing pitcher Alexander Wells (1-2) was charged with six runs and allowed seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. Ryan Mountcastle drove in the Orioles' run with a double.

Blue Jays 7, Indians 2

Teoscar Hernandez went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer and three RBIs and Hyun Jin Ryu struck out a season-best eight batters as Toronto defeated visiting Cleveland.

George Springer had a solo home run, a sacrifice fly and a double to help the Blue Jays gain a split of the first two games of the four-game series. Ryu (11-5) allowed two runs, seven hits and no walks in seven innings.

Cleveland's Zach Plesac (6-4) gave up six runs and 10 hits in five innings.

Phillies 5, Nationals 4

Zack Wheeler pitched into the eighth inning and visiting Philadelphia hit four homers in a win over Washington.

Jean Segura, J.T. Realmuto, Ronald Torreyes and Bryce Harper homered for the Phillies, who have won three straight.

Wheeler (9-6) gave up four runs on eight hits in 7 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out five while improving to 1-3 in five starts against the Nationals this season and 7-14 lifetime vs. Washington.

Tigers 4, Red Sox 2

Miguel Cabrera hit his 498th career home run, Robbie Grossman had two hits and drove in a run, and host Detroit handed Boston its fifth consecutive loss.

Tigers starting pitcher Wily Peralta gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits in 4 2/3 innings. Kyle Funkhouser (5-1) fanned the only batter he faced and was credited with the win. Gregory Soto pitched the ninth inning for his 12th save.

Red Sox starter Garrett Richards (6-7) allowed three runs on five hits in four-plus innings. Hunter Renfroe hit his 17th homer of the season and J.D. Martinez added two hits and an RBI.

Braves 6, Cardinals 1

Max Fried threw six shutout innings as visiting Atlanta defeated St. Louis in the opener of their three-game series.

Jorge Soler hit a two-run homer and Freddie Freeman went 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored for the Braves, who moved within 2 1/2 games of the first-place New York Mets in the National League East.

Fried (8-7) struck out seven batters and allowed just four hits while beating the Cardinals for the second time this year. He has held them to one run on six hits in 13 innings in those two starts.

White Sox 7, Royals 1

Tim Anderson homered among his three hits and three RBIs, Andrew Vaughn smacked a solo shot and Dylan Cease delivered six shutout innings to lift host Chicago over Kansas City.

Relievers Michael Kopech, Garrett Crochet and Ryan Tepera combined with Cease on a three-hitter. Hunter Dozier's triple in the seventh was the Royals' lone extra-base hit. Dozier scored one batter later on Ryan O'Hearn's sacrifice fly.

Chicago capitalized when the Royals' relief corps struggled with command in the next half-inning. After Kyle Zimmer walked the bases loaded, Seby Zavala coaxed a walk from Richard Lovelady to force in a run. Anderson followed with an RBI single before Jose Abreu smacked a two-run single to punctuate a four-run rally.

Angels 11, Rangers 3

Jo Adell had three hits and three RBIs in his season debut to help Los Angeles beat Texas in the second game of their four-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Adell, the 10th pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake and started in right field. He doubled twice, singled and walked.

Phil Gosselin also had three hits and drove in three runs, Jack Mayfield slugged a two-run homer, and David Fletcher and Shohei Ohtani added two hits apiece for the Angels.

Rockies 13, Cubs 6

Elias Diaz hit a grand slam and Sam Hilliard also drove in four runs as Colorado clubbed Chicago in Denver.

Diaz tallied three hits and scored three times; C.J. Cron had three hits and three RBIs; Hilliard had two hits, including a home run; and Trevor Story hit two doubles and scored twice for Colorado. Ian Happ homered and scored three times for the Cubs.

Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (2-6) was hit by a line drive in his left foot in the fifth inning. The left-hander finished the inning but left after throwing warmup pitches in the sixth. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five. Cubs starter Zach Davies (6-8) surrendered seven runs on six hits and two walks in four innings.
