Illinois State Police investigate fatal crash in Logan County

WHAT: Two Unit Fatal Traffic Crash

WHERE: Illinois Route 121 south of County Road 1000 N., Logan County

WHEN: Aug. 6, 2021 at approximately 4:10 p.m.

VEHICLE:
Unit 1 – 2002 White Suzuki XL-7 Grand Vitara

Unit 2 – 2007 Silver Freightliner Truck Tractor Semi-Trailer

DRIVER:
Unit 1 – 35-year-old male from Springfield, IL – Deceased

Unit 2 – James R. Howard, 43-year-old male from Kenney, IL

PRELIMINARY: A preliminary investigation indicates the following occurred: Unit 1 was traveling northbound on Illinois Route 121 south of County Road 1000 N. For unknown reasons, the driver of Unit 1 drove off the roadway to the right, over corrected back to the right, and lost control. Unit 1 traveled into oncoming traffic where it was struck by Unit 2. The driver of Unit 1 was pronounced deceased on scene by the Logan County Deputy Coroner.

At approximately 4:35 p.m. Illinois Route 121 was closed to traffic in both directions for the crash investigation. At approximately 10:24 a.m. Illinois Route 121 was reopened to traffic. The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit (TCRU) is continuing the investigation. No further information will be disseminated at this time.
