The quarterfinal matchup featured two of the three major winners
this year, as Krejcikova won the French Open in June and Barty
won Wimbledon last month.
"I feel like I did a good job looking after my own serves,"
Barty said. "I felt like a lot of the time I was in control of
it. That just allowed me to be more free on Barbora's service
games. Overall, I was able to use my forehand and slice
effectively."
Barty cruised fairly easily to a first-set victory, but
struggled in the second set at the start. Krejcikova broke
Barty's serve in the third game to go up 2-1.
But Barty recovered and won the last four games to turn a 4-2
deficit into a 6-4 set win.
"I feel like it's nice to get a couple of matches now here in
Cincy," Barty said. "Each match you get to play in different
conditions and you get more and more used to it. I'm just able
to adjust and adapt, and I look forward to my next one, no
doubt."
Barty will face Germany's Angelique Kerber in the semifinals.
Kerber advanced after 11th-seeded Petra Kvitova of the Czech
Republic retired in the second set.
Kerber won the first set 6-4 with a 63% first serve percentage
while Kvitova had six aces and three double faults. The second
set was tied at 3-3 when Kvitova retired.
"I stayed out there as long as I could," Kvitova tweeted after
the match. "I have been struggling with a stomach issue for
several days and unfortunately couldn't finish the match today."
Wild-card entrant Jil Teichmann completed her second-straight
upset by defeating Swiss countrywoman No. 10 seed Belinda Bencic
6-3, 6-2.
Behind winning 84.6 percent of her first-serve points and saving
all five of her break points, Teichmann ended Bencic's
nine-match win streak that included winning the Olympic gold
medal in Tokyo.
Teichmann upset No. 2 seed Naomi Osaka in three sets Thursday in
the third round to advance to the quarterfinals.
Teichmann next will face fifth-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the
Czech Republic, who won her quarterfinal when Paula Badosa of
Spain retired due to a right shoulder injury.
Pliskova was leading 7-5, 2-0 when the match ended. She had five
aces to none for Badosa and dominated in converting break
points, 57.1 percent to 28.6 percent.
