Love injured his right shoulder and was not participating in
team practice sessions since leaving the preseason game with the
Houston Texans on Aug. 14. He did not play in the Saturday
exhibition against the New York Jets, and was only an observer
for the joint workouts at Lambeau Field last week.
An MRI exam on Love's throwing shoulder was negative, but the
Packers went the safe route with the 2020 first-round pick and
reigning MVP Aaron Rodgers' backup.
Head coach Matt LaFleur said the Packers will use the first few
days of the week to determine whether Love sees the field
against the Buffalo Bills in the final preseason game of the
season on Saturday.
No. 3 quarterback Kurt Benkert led a pair of first-half
touchdown drives against the Jets and worked overtime by
preseason standards with Love out of the mix.
Benkert also tripped dropping back from center twice on the same
drive.
The Packers could keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster,
LaFleur said, but pointed to countless variables that will
factor into that final decision.
"He's definitely going to make it tough on us to decide which
way we want to go," LaFleur said of Benkert.
