Richard Gasquet pulls off upset in Winston-Salem Open

[August 26, 2021]   Richard Gasquet of France, the 14th seed in the Winston-Salem Open, knocked off third-seeded Daniel Evans of Great Britain 6-4, 7-6 (4) in the tournament's round of 16 on Wednesday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

 


Gasquet, ranked 82nd in the world, fell behind in the second-set tiebreaker 2-1 when he failed to hold serve, but then he won consecutive service points from Evans, a wild-card entrant who is 27th in the ATP rankings. Form held until Gasquet wrapped up the match, which lasted just short of two hours.

Top-seeded Pablo Carreno Busta of Spain, also a wild-card entry, disposed of Dominik Koepfer of Germany in just over an hour, 6-2, 6-3.

Two other seeded players, Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff and France's Benoit Paire, also lost Wednesday. The ninth-seeded Struff fell in straight sets to Ilya Ivashka of Belarus 6-2, 6-1, and Paire, seeded 12th, lost a 2-hour, 17-minute match to Emil Ruusuvuori of Finland 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Thirteenth-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States edged Brazil's Thiago Monteiro 7-5, 7-6 (2). Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, the 15th seed, pushed past fourth-seeded Marton Fucsovics of Hungary 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.

Mikael Ymer of Sweden also advanced, beating lucky loser Max Purcell of Australia 7-5, 6-2. The United States' Marcos Giron rallied past France's Pierre-Hugues Herbert 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
