[December 14, 2021] The
Mount Pulaski Honeybears season came to an end on Saturday with a
31-30 loss to Teutopolis in the first round of the 8th Grade Class
2A State Tournament at Havana High School.
The Honeybears led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter but found
themselves trailing 15-13 at the half. Teutopolis held a 25-22 lead
after the third quarter. Despite a great effort by Mount Pulaski,
Teutopolis advanced with a 31-30 win over the Honeybears.
Mount Pulaski
Head
Coach
Jamie Anderson was still very proud of his team’s effort against
Teutopolis, a school rich in basketball history.
“This was a great game right off the bat,” said Anderson.
“We were able to grab a first quarter lead, but unfortunately we
ran into foul trouble and our offense stalled in the second quarter.
Both teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter and we were down
three after the third. Teutopolis was in foul trouble during the second
half, but we missed a few key free throws down the stretch. We were able
to get a timeout with 13.4 seconds left to go in the game. We fumbled
the ball from the top of the key but Elayna Marten was able to corral it
and got off a shot from about 10-12 feet to the left of the lane. Her
shot just hit off the front of the rim and Teutopolis came down with the
rebound and time expired. We knew it was going to be a tough game going
into the contest, because they had a lot of great length and had been
beating other teams by big margins. We were able to keep their main
scorer in check, but we just came up short in the end. It was a
wonderful season and I’m very proud of how well both of our teams
performed.”
