Top 25 roundup: Ole Miss upsets No. 10 Missouri

[February 11, 2021]  Jarkel Joiner scored 21 points as the Ole Miss Rebels stunned the No. 10 Missouri Tigers 80-59 Wednesday night in Oxford, Miss.

Devontae Shuler and Luis Rodriguez each added 15 points for the Rebels (11-8, 6-6 Southeastern Conference). The Rebels have beaten two Top 10 teams for the first time since the 2000-2001 season, moving them closer to the NCAA Tournament bubble.

Dru Smith led Missouri (13-4, 6-4) with 17 points. Javon Pickett came off the bench to add 10. The Tigers turned the ball over 12 times and made just 5 of 15 shots from the free-throw line.

Ole Miss scored the first nine points of the second half to build a 14-point lead and seize control of the game. The Rebels pushed their lead to 64-43 with 11:18 left on Sammy Hunter's dunk. Ole Miss has won 14 of 17 games in its series against Missouri.

No. 5 Villanova 96, Marquette 64

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 27 points, eight rebounds and three steals as the Wildcats put away the Golden Eagles in Villanova, Pa.

Robinson-Earl shot 10 of 11 from the field and 5 of 5 from 3-point territory as Villanova reached a season high in points scored. Collin Gillespie added 16 points and 11 assists for the Wildcats (13-2, 8-1 Big East).

Freshman Dawson Garcia scored a season-high 28 points for Marquette while D.J. Carton added 13. The Golden Eagles (9-11, 5-9) lost for the fifth time in six games.

No. 8 Houston 82, South Florida 65

Quentin Grimes scored 29 points on 10-of-21 shooting to help the Cougars cruise past the Bulls in Tampa, Fla., in a game that was postponed on Jan. 14 due to COVID-19 issues within the South Florida program.

The Cougars (17-2, 11-2 American Athletic Conference) bounced back in conference play following a loss to East Carolina last week. DeJon Jarreau totaled 17 points, eight assists and four rebounds while shooting 8-for-13 from the field. Houston shot 53.2 percent from the field (33-for-62) and 32 percent from 3-point range (8-for-25).

The Bulls (7-6, 3-4) had their past seven games postponed, played for the first time in 32 days. David Collins led them with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, and added five rebounds and four assists.

No. 9 Virginia 57, Georgia Tech 49

Kihei Clark scored all 14 of his points in the second half at Atlanta, and the Cavaliers used a late 12-1 run to defeat the Yellow Jackets for the eighth consecutive time.

First-place Virginia (14-3, 10-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame a sluggish, sloppy first half and snapped a school-record 11-game ACC home winning streak by the Yellow Jackets (9-7, 5-5).

Trey Murphy III scored a team-high 18 points for Virginia, which has won three straight games and 10 of its past 11. Jose Alvarado paced Georgia Tech with 18 points and Jordan Usher added 12.

No. 15 Iowa 79, No. 25 Rutgers 66

Joe Wieskamp scored a season-high 26 points, Luka Garza added 22 points and both players snagged 10 rebounds as the Hawkeyes defeated the Scarlet Knights in Iowa City to snap a two-game losing streak.

Iowa (14-6, 8-5 Big Ten) led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Rutgers rallied to within six points with 9:16 to go before the Hawkeyes quickly regained control with a 7-2 run over the next 1:52.

Despite shooting 51.4 percent in the second half, Rutgers (11-7, 7-7) saw its four-game winning streak end. The Scarlet Knights started 1-for-16 from 3-point range en route to a 6-for-28 effort from deep. Geo Baker (11 points) and Jacob Young (10) scored in double figures for Rutgers.

No. 16 Tennessee 89, Georgia 81

Freshman Jaden Springer scored a career-high 30 points and sophomore Josiah-Jordan James added a career-best 18 points to lead the 16th-ranked Volunteers to a victory over the visiting Bulldogs in Knoxville, Tenn.

Santiago Vescovi had 19 points and six rebounds and Keon Johnson added 11 points for the Volunteers (14-4, 7-4 SEC), who won for the fourth time in five games.

For Georgia, K.D. Johnson scored a team-high 22 points, Toumani Camara had 14 points and eight rebounds and Sahvir Wheeler added 11 points and five assists. The Bulldogs (12-7, 5-7) ended a three-game winning streak.

No. 21 Wisconsin 61, Nebraska 48

Freshman Jonathan Davis had 10 points to lead a balanced scoring effort as the visiting Badgers kept the Cornhuskers winless in Big Ten play in Lincoln, Neb.

Five others scored at least eight points for the Badgers (15-6, 9-5 Big Ten), who have split their past six games. Wisconsin, which beat Nebraska for a sixth straight time, shot just 32.3 percent overall but held the Cornhuskers to 30.8 percent in the second half and took advantage of 17 total turnovers by the home team.

Lat Mayen had 14 points and Teddy Allen scored 12 for Nebraska (4-11, 0-8), which recorded its fewest points of the season while dropping its 24th consecutive Big Ten regular-season contest.
