MLB roundup: Indians get another walk-off vs. Royals

[July 10, 2021]  Bobby Bradley homered in the ninth inning as host Cleveland defeated Kansas City 2-1 on Friday, the second consecutive night that the Indians topped the Royals in walk-off fashion.

Indians starter Triston McKenzie allowed just one hit in seven innings, his longest career outing. He walked just one and struck out nine.

Royals starter Brad Keller yielded one run on four hits in 7 2/3 innings, the longest outing by a Kansas City starter this season. He had a season-high nine strikeouts.

Cleveland's Bradley Zimmer opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second inning, and Kansas City's Jorge Soler tied the contest with an eighth-inning home run.

Mariners 7, Angels 3

Mitch Haniger hit a tiebreaking grand slam in the eighth inning as Seattle overcame a tape-measure home run by Shohei Ohtani to defeat visiting Los Angeles.

Ohtani hit his major-league-leading 33rd home run, a 463-foot blast into the upper deck in right field at T-Mobile Park. It was the third-longest homer in ballpark history, behind a 465-foot shot by Milwaukee's Chris Carter in 2016 and a 464-footer by the Chicago White Sox's Jose Abreu in 2017.

Drew Steckenrider (3-2) got the victory with a scoreless inning of relief. Marco Gonzales started for the Mariners and allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings while Angels starter Alex Cobb yielded two runs (both unearned) in 5 1/3 innings.

Mets 13, Pirates 4

Francisco Lindor's grand slam capped a 10-run sixth inning outburst by host New York in a win over Pittsburgh.

The Mets have won five of their last seven. The Pirates have lost eight of 11.

The teams were tied 2-2 before 10 of the first 11 Mets to step to the plate in the sixth reached base against a trio of Pirates pitchers. Starter JT Brubaker (4-9) allowed a leadoff single to Brandon Nimmo and walked Francisco Lindor before Dominic Smith delivered the go-ahead RBI single. Pete Alonso chased Brubaker by hitting a three-run homer on the next pitch.

Twins 4, Tigers 2

Max Kepler hit a two-run triple to highlight a four-run sixth inning and Kenta Maeda extended his scoreless inning streak to 11 as Minnesota defeated Detroit in Minneapolis.

Maeda held the Tigers to just two singles and two walks over five innings while striking out seven. Jorge Alcala (2-3) picked up the win, allowing no runs on two hits over 1 1/3 innings.

Robbie Grossman homered for Detroit, which dropped to 3-11 in its past 14 games against Minnesota. Matt Manning (1-3), who didn't allow a hit in the first 4 1/3 innings, took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits over five-plus innings.

Red Sox 11, Phillies 5

J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the second inning and had four RBIs to spark Boston in a rout of visiting Philadelphia.

Enrique Hernandez had a solo homer and two RBIs for Boston, which won the opener of a three-game series. Rafael Devers added a solo blast, Christian Vazquez drove in two runs and Hunter Renfroe and Alex Verdugo each had an RBI.

Alec Bohm knocked a two-run single, J.T. Realmuto (2-for-4) had two RBIs and Bryce Harper also drove in a run for Philadelphia. Phillies starter Vince Velasquez (3-4) surrendered a season-worst eight runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 2 1/3 innings.

Braves 5, Marlins 0

Charlie Morton pitched seven scoreless innings and Freddie Freeman slugged a home run, leading Atlanta over host Miami.

Morton (8-3) allowed just two hits -- both singles -- and two walks while striking out seven. He retired nine of the first 10 Marlins batters and 11 of the final 12 to face him.

Ozzie Albies, Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson each had two hits and an RBI for the Braves.

Rangers 3, Athletics 2

Adolis Garcia's two-run, go-ahead single highlighted a three-run sixth inning, and Texas held on to beat Oakland in Arlington, Texas.

Oakland's Cole Irvin (6-8) did not allow a hit through the first five innings, but he took the loss after he was charged with three runs on three hits without recording an out in the sixth.

Jordan Lyles (5-5) threw six innings of two-run ball for the win. He allowed seven hits and a walk while striking out three.

Cubs 10, Cardinals 5

Joc Pederson and Kris Bryant hit three-run doubles to lift Chicago past visiting St. Louis.

Patrick Wisdom added a two-run home run for the Cubs, who won for just the second time in their past 14 games. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks (11-4) yielded just two runs on seven hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.

Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, who lost for the fourth time in six games. St. Louis' Wade LeBlanc (0-2) lasted just three innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks.

Rays 7, Blue Jays 1

Ji-Man Choi drove in three runs as Tampa Bay beat Toronto in St. Petersburg, Fla., to win its fifth consecutive game.

The Rays used three relievers, who allowed one hit over the final five innings. Starter Shane McClanahan went four innings, giving up a run on one hit. He recorded five of the team's 14 strikeouts.

Tampa Bay chased Toronto rookie Alek Manoah (2-1) in the fourth after he struck Choi in the knee with bases loaded, driving in the Rays' third run of the night.

Reds 2, Brewers 0

Wade Miley pitched eight-plus effective innings and slumping Jesse Winker delivered an RBI double as Cincinnati won at Milwaukee.

Miley (7-4) gave up seven hits, struck out four and walked three. His night ended when he allowed a double to Avisail Garcia on his first pitch of the ninth. Heath Hembree entered to strike out the next three batters for his fifth save.

Eric Lauer (3-4) took the loss despite allowing only one run on four hits in six innings. He fanned three and walked four.

Yankees 4, Astros 0

Brett Gardner and DJ LeMahieu delivered two-run doubles as New York claimed the opener of a three-game road series against Houston.

Yankees starter Nestor Cortes tossed 4 2/3 innings of shutout ball while the bullpen took care of the rest.

Jake Odorizzi (3-4) took the loss despite delivering a quality start. He threw six innings of two-run ball, surrendering seven hits and no walks while striking out four.

Giants 5, Nationals 3
 

Curt Casali, Darin Ruf and Wilmer Flores hit home runs and five San Francisco relievers combined to shut out visiting Washington over the final five innings.

Casali hit a two-run homer in the second before Ruf had a solo shot in the fifth and Flores hit a solo homer in the seventh. The Giants lead the major leagues with 130 homers.

Washington's Tres Barrera, who entered when Yan Gomes was forced out in the second inning due to an oblique injury, hit a two-run triple.

Diamondbacks 5, Dodgers 2

Taylor Widener pitched 4 1/3 effective innings in his return from the injured list and Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run home run as Arizona won in Los Angeles for the first time in 10 tries.

Brett de Geus (1-0) recorded two outs on four pitches to earn his first career victory, and Joakim Soria pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his third save.

AJ Pollock hit a home run for the Dodgers. David Price pitched three scoreless innings in his longest outing of the season.

Padres 4, Rockies 2

Miguel Diaz and three other San Diego relievers held visiting Colorado scoreless on one hit over the final 5 1/3 innings as the Padres went on to victory.

Wil Myers capped a two-run sixth with a tiebreaking double that put the Padres on top for good in the opener of a three-game series.

Diaz (3-1) allowed one hit and no walks while striking out three in 2 2/3 scoreless innings in relief. Mark Melancon picked up his major-league-leading 27th save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning. Rockies starter Kyle Freeland gave up three runs on five hits in five-plus innings.
