Obituary
Doris Jean Steffens, 94, of Lincoln
made her final journey on Friday, July 16, 2021.
The family will have a private funeral service and a
celebration of life on September 18, 2021 at the
Knights of Columbus in Lincoln.
Doris was born on Sept. 23, 1926 as the daughter of
Fern Walker-Sanders and William Sanders. She married
Merritt E. Steffens on Aug. 15, 1944. She is the
mother of Dale (Bonnie) Steffens, David (Pat)
Steffens, Steven Merritt Steffens, Darla (Scott)
Smith and Darrell (Kathy) Steffens.
Doris was a devout Christian and a member of Zion
Lutheran Church in Lincoln. She retired from Lehn &
Fink and became permanently “on the go” with small
road trips around the state of Illinois with her
husband, Merritt. They moved into Lincoln upon
building their dream retirement home, where she
fulfilled many a sweet tooth with her candy drawer
for all the grandchildren and their friends. Merritt
preceded her in death on January 20, 1998. |
That loss propelled her to seize her
life and she expanded her travels around the
country. She began her adventures by purchasing a
travel van to explore the American landscape before
she ultimately upgraded her means to luxury
motorhome. She was fortunate to find a travel and
life partner in Merrill Markel, who she married in
2002 before settling in Texas for a decade.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Merritt
and Merrill and her sons, David and Steven Merritt.
She has 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers or cards, donations can be made
in memory of Doris to Carroll Catholic School, Zion
Lutheran School or the Logan County Humane Society.
