Nolan Arenado also homered for the Cardinals, who ended a
six-game losing streak to the Reds and showed signs of life
after their manager Mike Shildt was ejected in the third inning.
St. Louis reliever Giovanny Gallegos worked out of a
bases-loaded jam with none out in the eighth to protect a
three-run lead. Cincinnati was just 3-for-17 with runners in
scoring position and stranded 13 runners.
Reliever Ryan Helsley (5-4) recorded the final two outs in the
fifth for the win.
Sonny Gray (2-6) suffered through his worst outing in a Reds
uniform, allowing three homers and eight hits over just 3 1/3
innings, getting tagged for eight earned runs, including six in
the fourth inning.
Tyler Stephenson had three hits and reached base in all five
plate appearances for the Reds, who finished a disappointing
post-All Star break homestand with a 3-6 mark.
Joey Votto's 14th home run -- a three-run shot off St. Louis
starter Johan Oviedo -- staked Cincinnati to a 3-2 lead.
Frustration spilled over for the Cardinals in the third inning
when Reds third baseman Mike Freeman made a running, leaping
throw across his body from foul territory to nab Ryan Carlson at
first to begin the inning.
Umpire crew chief Ron Kulpa would not allow Shildt to challenge
as Shildt waited to hear from his staff reviewing the play.
Shildt argued with Kulpa, resumed the argument after the
Cardinals were retired and was ejected.
The Cardinals exploded for seven runs in the fourth as Bader
connected for a three-run homer and Carlson drove his 10th homer
to the visitors' bullpen in right.
Despite the 9-3 cushion, Oviedo failed to earn his first big
league win in his 18th career start (19th appearance) as two of
his six walks came in the fifth inning to load the bases. He was
relieved by Helsley. Oviedo allowed five hits and three runs
while striking out six and walking six in 4 1/3 innings, two
outs shy of qualifying for a win.
Helsley fanned Aristides Aquino and induced Kyle Farmer to pop
out to short to end the fifth.
