MLB roundup: Tigers top Twins 17-14

[July 29, 2021] Willi Castro had an RBI triple and Jeimer Candelario added a two-run double to highlight an eight-run fourth inning as the Detroit Tigers bolted out to a 10-run lead and then held on for a wild 17-14 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon in Minneapolis.

Eric Haase scored three runs and had three RBIs, Derek Hill went 3-for-6 with two RBIs and Candelario had two doubles and three RBIs for the Tigers, who claimed the rubber contest of the three-game series while pounding out 16 hits.

Castro, Akil Baddoo and Harold Castro also had two hits and Zack Short added two RBIs for Detroit. Derek Holland (2-2) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief.

Ryan Jeffers hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and had six RBIs, Miguel Sano went 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBIs and Max Kepler, Brent Rooker and Jorge Polanco also hit home runs for Minnesota. J.A. Happ (5-6) allowed nine runs on 10 hits and four walks in three-plus innings.

Dodgers 8, Giants 0

Walker Buehler threw seven shutout innings and aided his own cause by scoring a run and driving in another as visiting Los Angeles coasted past San Francisco.

Max Muncy and AJ Pollock had three hits apiece and Cody Bellinger homered as the Dodgers rebounded from a 2-1 loss in the series opener and moved back within two games of the first-place Giants in the National League West.

Buehler allowed three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Giants starter Anthony DeSclafani (10-5) gave up four runs on six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Angels 8, Rockies 7

Shohei Ohtani's major-league-leading 37th home run gave the Angels their first lead of the night, but it was an eighth-inning RBI single by Phil Gosselin that ultimately lifted Los Angeles to a victory over Colorado in Anaheim, Calif.

Ohtani's three-run homer off Jesus Tinoco was part of a five-run fourth inning for the Angels, who later took a 7-3 lead. Justin Upton and Max Stassi also homered for Los Angeles. Raimel Tapia had four hits and Trevor Story homered for Colorado.

Raisel Iglesias (7-4) pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings for the win, though he also was charged with a blown save. Carlos Estevez (2-3) took the loss.

Athletics 10, Padres 4

Sean Manaea retired the first 16 batters he faced and Matt Chapman hit a three-run homer as the visiting Oakland routed San Diego.

Oakland halted a four-game losing streak and gained a split of the two-game interleague series.

Manaea (8-6) wound up allowing one hit and one walk with nine strikeouts in six shutout innings. Elvis Andrus added three hits and two RBIs for the A's, and Mark Canha had two hits and two RBIs.

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 1 (Game 1)

Randal Grichuk hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fourth inning and drove in three runs as Toronto defeated host Boston in the opener of a day-night doubleheader.

George Springer also hit a solo home run for Toronto, which lost 5-4 in the series opener Monday. The game was a makeup of Tuesday's scheduled contest that was postponed due to inclement weather.

Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray (9-5) tossed six innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and three walks while fanning eight. Jordan Romano pitched a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout to pick up his eighth save of the season.

Red Sox 4, Blue Jays 1 (Game 2)

Taylor Houck pitched four solid innings, Jarren Duran settled for a triple on an exciting trip around the bases and host Boston beat Toronto to salvage a split of the day-night doubleheader.

Kevin Plawecki finished with three hits in the Red Sox's seventh win in their last nine games. Houck struck out seven, allowing one run on two hits and a walk. Bo Bichette drove in the lone run for the Blue Jays.

Boston's Rafael Devers exited in the sixth with an apparent injury. Toronto's Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was hit by a pitch in the elbow to begin the seventh and was removed for a pinch runner.

Royals 3, White Sox 2 (10 innings)

Michael A. Taylor's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave host Kansas City a victory over Chicago. Taylor's fourth career walk-off RBI drove in Hunter Dozier from second.

Scott Barlow (3-3) earned the victory after throwing a scoreless top of the 10th. Ryan Burr (2-1) took the loss.

Salvador Perez's 438-foot home run with one out in the ninth tied the score off Liam Hendriks, who took his fifth blown save.

Brewers 7, Pirates 3

Lorenzo Cain and Luis Urias each hit two-run doubles to lead visiting Milwaukee past Pittsburgh.

Avisail Garcia and Tyrone Taylor each added an RBI single for the Brewers, who have won four of five. Milwaukee starter Adrian Houser (7-5) breezed through five scoreless innings, giving up two hits and a walk and striking out two.

Rodolfo Castro homered twice for the Pirates, who have lost three straight and seven of nine.

Yankees 3, Rays 1 (10 innings)

Aaron Judge hit a tiebreaking single in the 10th inning and first baseman DJ LeMahieu made a diving catch to end the game as New York beat Tampa Bay in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Judge originally was in the starting lineup but was scratched about 45 minutes before first pitch due to additional medical testing related to his prior stint on the COVID-19 injured list. His hit gave the Yankees their seventh win in 10 games.

Brandon Lowe hit a fourth-inning RBI double for the Rays, who have lost 10 extra-inning games this season.

Orioles 8, Marlins 7

Ryan McKenna drew a walk-off walk in the ninth inning as host Baltimore rallied to defeat Miami.

The Marlins, who blew an early 5-0 lead and a 7-5 advantage in the eighth, had their three-game win streak snapped. Miami's Jesus Aguilar, who leads the National League with 75 RBIs, drove in three runs with a homer and a double off the wall. Both of his shots were to center field.

Baltimore slugged two homers -- a three-run shot by Pedro Severino and a solo blast from Trey Mancini.

Mets 2, Braves 1

Brandon Drury hit his third pinch-hit home run of the season to give New York a win over visiting Atlanta.

Drury connected on the first pitch he saw from Max Fried (7-7) in the seventh inning and drilled a solo shot into the left field seats, snapping a 1-1 tie. Over his past four games, Drury is 6-for-6 with two doubles, two homers, three RBIs and four runs.

New York starter Tylor Megill, celebrating his 26th birthday, worked 5 1/3 innings but was removed after Austin Riley tagged him for a solo home run. Jeff McNeil singled home the Mets' first run in the third inning, and Edwin Diaz earned his 23rd save.

Reds 8, Cubs 2

Joey Votto homered twice and tied a team record by going deep in his fifth straight game and Tyler Mahle pitched six shutout innings to boost visiting Cincinnati past Chicago.

The Reds, behind an 11-hit attack, won for the fourth time in six games. In addition to Votto, who drove in three runs, Kyle Farmer and Jesse Winker each delivered two hits.

Mahle (8-3) limited Chicago to five hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Nico Hoerner and Patrick Wisdom both had two hits for the Cubs.

Astros 11, Mariners 4

Yuli Gurriel singled, doubled, homered and drove in three runs as Houston defeated host Seattle.

Kyle Tucker also went deep and Aledmys Diaz added three RBIs for the Astros, who took two of three games in the series. Houston has won seven of its past nine games.

Kyle Seager and Abraham Toro hit home runs for Seattle. Toro went deep in all three games of the series, although he homered for Houston in the opener before being acquired by the Mariners in a trade on Tuesday.

Indians 7, Cardinals 2

Franmil Reyes hit two homers to power Cleveland past the visiting St. Louis.

Cesar Hernandez added a two-run homer and a sacrifice fly for the Indians, who earned a split of this two-game series while winning for just the third time in their last nine tries.

Winning pitcher Zach Plesac (6-3) allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings. Relievers Blake Parker, Nick Sandlin, Emmanuel Clase and James Karinchak each threw a scoreless inning of relief to finish off the victory.

Diamondbacks 3, Rangers 2

Daulton Varsho hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning to lift Arizona to a win at Arlington, Texas.

David Peralta also homered and Madison Bumgarner pitched seven solid innings as the Diamondbacks won for the sixth time in their past nine games. Arizona had just three hits and improved to 4-21 in one-run games.

The Rangers lost for the 13th time in their past 14 games. Texas snapped a 12-game skid when it won Tuesday's opener of the two-game set.
