The Hilltoppers suffered their first loss of
the season on Tuesday against Oakwood.
The Comets scored two runs in the top of the first inning off
Gavin Smith.
Three walks and a single allowed the Comets to score another run
in the top of the second inning.
Oakwood added an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning to
take a 4-0 lead over Mount Pulaski.
The Hilltoppers, who had just managed three hits through five
innings, finally scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Drew
Martin led the inning off with a home run to left. With one out,
Landon Smith drew a walk and then stole second. Grant Davis
singled to right, allowing Smith to advance to third. Landon
Smith scored on the fielder’s choice by Gavin Smith. The Comets
retired Garrett Fitzpatrick on a pop out to end the inning,
preserving the 4-2 lead.
The Hilltoppers were retired in the bottom of the seventh inning
on a pop out, a strikeout and a fly out. The Comets held on to
win 4-2.
Isaiah Ruch earned the win for Oakwood. He threw six innings and
allowed two runs on five hits. He struck out eight Hilltoppers
and walked three.
Josh Young got the save for the Comets. He worked one inning and
struck out one batter.
Gavin Smith took the loss for Mount Pulaski. He tossed one and
two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on two hits. Only one
run was earned. He walked five Comets.
A.J. Bailey threw three and one-third innings. He allowed two
hits and one run. He struck out four batters and walked four.
Landon Smith pitched one inning and allowed one hit.
Drew Martin closed out the game for Mount Pulaski. He pitched
one inning and allowed one hit, while striking out two batters
and walking one.
Mount Pulaski had five hits in the game.
Drew Martin was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Landon
Smith was 1-for-2 with a run scored. Grant Davis was 1-for-2.
A.J. Bailey was 1-for-4.
Mount Pulaski ends the regular season with a 16-1 record.
IHSA Class 1A Baseball Regionals begin on Friday for Mount
Pulaski. The Hilltoppers will host Argenta-Oreana at 4:30 p.m.
at Veteran’s Park.
