The Hilltoppers were quick to jump all over
Bombers pitching on Friday afternoon at Veteran’s Park in Mount
Pulaski as the Class 1A Regionals got underway.
Drew Martin slugged a first inning home run with two outs to
give Mount Pulaski a 1-0 lead. Grant Davis added an RBI single
to put the Hilltoppers up 2-0.
In the second inning the Hilltoppers exploded for nine runs.
Lucas Kuhlman’s RBI triple scored Garrett Fitzpatrick for the
third run of the game. Kuhlman scored on a wild pitch. With the
bases loaded, the Bombers pitching was wild. Mount Pulaski
plated three consecutive runs on a walk and two hit batters.
Another run came trotting home on a passed ball. With Kuhlman up
to bat again, he doubled to right, driving in two runs this
time. A.J. Bailey drove in Kuhlman with a base hit to left and
the Hilltoppers were up 11-0 in the second inning.
Evan Cooper led off the bottom of the third inning with a double
for Mount Pulaski. After a walk to Drew Martin, Landon Smith hit
a single to left driving in the courtesy runner, Luke Farris.
With two outs in the inning, Mount Pulaski went on to score
three more runs. Fitzpatrick and Kuhlman each drew bases-loaded
walks to score two of the runs. Bailey finished things off by
crushing the ball to center and with Davis crossing home plate
with run no. 15, the game was over in three innings.
Mount Pulaski advances to the Regional Championship with the
15-0 win over Argenta-Oreana.
Evan Cooper earned the win for Mount Pulaski. He tossed three
innings, allowing four hits and no runs. He struck out one
batter and walked two.
Mount Pulaski had 10 hits in the game.
Lucas Kuhlman was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBIs.
A.J. Bailey was 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Landon
Smith was 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBIs. Grant Davis was
1-for-1 with two runs and two RBIs.
Drew Martin, Evan Cooper, Garrett Fitzpatrick, and Jackson
Fricke each had a hit for Mount Pulaski.
Mount Pulaski’s record is 17-1 on the season.
The Hilltoppers play Monday at 4:30 p.m. at home for the
Regional Championship.
