MLB roundup: Padres extend Cubs' slump

[June 08, 2021]  Manny Machado and Brian O'Grady each homered and drove in three runs Monday night as the San Diego Padres defeated the visiting Chicago Cubs 9-4.

Machado had two sacrifice flies before triggering a three-run eighth with a leadoff homer -- after Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo dropped his foul popup for an error -- against Chicago reliever Cory Abbott.

O'Grady, who was called up from Triple-A El Paso earlier in the day, hit a two-run homer off Cubs starter Adbert Alzolay in the third, and he doubled home the Padres' final run in the eighth.

Ryan Weathers (3-2) picked up the win despite allowing three runs on five hits in five innings. He walked one and struck out four. Alzolay (4-5) gave up four runs on five hits and five walks in three-plus innings. The Cubs lost for the fourth time in five games since they swept the Padres in a three-game series early last week.

Red Sox 5, Marlins 3

Christian Arroyo amassed two hits, two runs and two RBIs, leading host Boston over Miami. The Marlins lost for the ninth time in 10 games, stranding 14 runners, including at least two in six different innings.

The Red Sox won their fifth consecutive game, thanks largely to the top three hitters in the batting order. Arroyo, Alex Verdugo and Xander Bogaerts combined for six of Boston's 10 hits.

Nick Pivetta gave way after 4 2/3 innings with a high pitch count, but five Red Sox relievers combined to hold Miami to one run over 4 1/3 innings. Hirokazu Sawamura (2-0) earned the win by throwing 1 1/3 scoreless frames. Adam Ottavino got the final four outs for his third save of the season.

Angels 8, Royals 3

Los Angeles scored four runs in the first inning and cruised past Kansas City in Anaheim, Calif., providing a not-so-warm welcome to highly touted Royals pitcher Jackson Kowar.

Kowar was making his major league debut after pitching impressively at Triple-A Omaha this season -- 5-0 with a 0.85 ERA in six starts. He recorded just two outs, gave up three hits, walked two and threw three wild pitches. Angels starter Dylan Bundy (1-6) surrendered two runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Bundy fanned two without issuing a walk.

Max Stassi led the Angels' offense with a single, a double, a homer, three runs and three RBIs. Hunter Dozier had three hits for Kansas City.
