"Sunny side up" opens at the Lincoln Arts Institute June 10th
Artist reception from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

[June 06, 2021]    Logan County Arts members will continue their 2021 emphasis on forward-looking themes with their June show, entitled “Sunny Side Up.” The show will open with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 10 at the Lincoln Arts Institute, 112 S. McLean St, Lincoln.

The gallery will also be open on Friday evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. throughout the month, with exhibiting artists on hand to discuss the works. The events will follow current Covid guidelines, with masks not required for those who are completely vaccinated. Gallery owner Marcia Cook commented, “We are glad to be able to welcome more people at one time with the new CDC guidelines and to be able to encourage the conversations and networking that make an opening such a pleasant event.”

“Sunny Side Up” calls to mind a wide variety of images among LCA artists. Photographer Randy Washam’s print shows “the classic sunny side up egg, along with other digitally transformed kitchen items, to demonstrate the beautiful moment of conception.” He explains that the use of vintage silk paper for the print offers a light texture reminiscent of classic photos, but that the print can be ordered in other formats.

Another unique piece is presented by ceramic artist Alice Ferguson, who has combined the appeal of classic Japanese raku pottery and traditional floral arrangements. Her low lily pad vase in subtle raku glazes is modified so that it can be used to hold fresh flowers. She was inspired by the famous waterlilies of Monet, who also took inspiration from Japanese art forms.

The sunny theme has been interpreted by several members in lighthearted works that recall the warmth of the season and burgeoning nature, as well as the satisfaction of celebrating the pleasures of home and family. Wildflowers and garden scenes, hummingbirds and youngsters all find a place in some of the depictions, in glowing color or in more subdued palettes.

Sheralyn Bolton says, “I love bright colors and have always viewed grey as too blah for my tastes, but have since fallen in love with the contrasts I can create with grey and yellow.” Her depiction of bright daisies takes advantage of this combination of tones. Tony Shuff has captured his new home in the country in its current surrounding of bluebells.

Deb Splain will present a large abstract painting in warm sunny tones that will go for the highest offer, with all proceeds to stay with Lincoln Arts Institute. Numerous other LCA members, including Margie Douglas, Sharon Sheehan-Fak, Jan Garza, Jason Hoffman, and Bev Noble, will also have new creations on display.

After opening night, the artworks will be available for viewing and purchase on Friday evenings and by appointment until July 2. Also available at the June opening will be information on the July exhibition, which will showcase sculptural works in wood and metal by regional artists Dennis French, Randy Reid and Jason Hoffman.
