Life seemed a little more 'familiar' than it has in the last 12
months on Sunday. Part of the reason may have been the annual Boy
Scout BBQ held at the Lincoln Knights of Columbus. Some may remember
that last year, the barbecue was one of the last public gatherings
permitted in Illinois. Even then, the state was urging an abundance
of caution. The community appeared to be taking heed, as was
reflected by the empty dining room at the barbecue and the rush to
pick up carry-out meals instead.
This year there was still a lot of precautions taken. Tables in the
dining room were not filled and overflowing as we would have seen
two years ago. People were eating in, but they appeared to be folks
who had traveled there together. They were all maintaining their
distance from other guests.
The event's eat-in side was not nearly as busy as the carry-out
side, as was noted by one of the local leaders who said that he felt
the carry-outs were twice if not triple the number of those dining
in.

Either way, as one young scout noted, it felt good to have the event.
The pulled pork lunch looked and smelled as delightful as ever, and the vast
array of desserts on the dine-in side reflected the many talented bakers who
pitched in to offer something special for those who chose to support the boy
scouts.
The annual barbecue is a fundraiser for the scouts to support the local program
in a variety of ways - money for outings, equipment purchases and gear for
scouts who are facing hardship.
