Kickapoo Creek Park Superintendent Joe Funk forms a dark silhouette against a wall of white smoke last week at the bi-annual prairie grass burn-off at the park.

The burn-off has been conducted every spring, alternating two patches, except 2020 when the event was canceled due to public health concerns in light of the coronavirus.

The conservation practice helps promote the growth of suitable native plants and deters invasive nuisance plant growth.

In today's edition, Lincoln Daily News has numerous photos of the burn-off held on March 22, as well as notes from Beverly Buhrmester explaining the annual conservation event.
