NHL roundup: Rangers top Caps with four-goal third period

[March 31, 2021] Artemi Panarin posted a goal and two assists -- all in the third period -- as the New York Rangers rallied to defeat the visiting Washington Capitals 5-2 Tuesday night.

The Capitals led 2-1 after two periods before the Rangers scored the game's final four goals. Washington's three-game winning streak ended while New York snapped its two-game losing streak.

Filip Chytil, Adam Fox and Pavel Buchnevich also scored for the Rangers, and Ryan Lindgren had two assists. Igor Shesterkin made 30 saves for the win.

T.J. Oshie and Nic Dowd scored in the first five minutes to give Washington a 2-0 lead. Capitals goalie Vitek Vanecek stopped 22 shots.

Blue Jackets 3, Lightning 1

David Savard's first goal in nearly two years proved to be the winner as Columbus beat defeated host Tampa Bay.

Nick Foligno provided two assists and Zach Werenski, Jack Roslovic and Texier added helpers for the Blue Jackets. Elvis Merzlikins withstood 37 of 38 Lightning shots.

Mathieu Joseph scored a goal and Luke Schenn and Andreas Borgman recorded assists for the Lightning, who lost their third straight for the first time this season.

Bruins 5, Devils 4 (SO)

Charlie McAvoy and Matt Grzelcyk scored fewer than six minutes apart to tie the game in the third period, and host Boston stormed back for a shootout win over New Jersey.

Charlie Coyle and David Pastrnak scored on Boston's only two shootout attempts. Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak stopped both of New Jersey's shootout shots, from Pavel Zacha and Kyle Palmieri. Both also got goals in regulation from Nick Ritchie and Brad Marchand, and Halak finished with 31 saves.

New Jersey's Miles Wood and Michael McLeod scored in the first period. Travis Zajac scored his 200th career goal early in the second and Kyle Palmieri added an unassisted goal late in the middle period for the Devils, who have lost three of four (1-2-1). Mackenzie Blackwood recorded 44 saves.

Panthers 4, Red Wings 1

Carter Verhaeghe scored twice, leading Florida past Detroit in Sunrise, Fla. After taking their first three-game losing streak of the season last week, the Panthers have now stacked three straight wins.

Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 35 saves, improved to 14-5-2. Florida got goals from Jonathan Huberdeau and Brett Connolly but lost Anthony Duclair to an apparent left shoulder injury.

Filip Zadina scored for the Red Wings. Detroit goalie Calvin Pickard was lifted after allowing three goals on eight shots. Thomas Greiss replaced him and stopped 24 of 25 shots.

Canadiens 4, Oilers 0

Jesperi Kotkaniemi, fresh off the NHL's coronavirus list, scored 18 seconds into the game and host Montreal went on to defeat Edmonton.

Artturi Lehkonen and Brendan Gallagher each had a goal and an assist for Montreal. Goaltender Carey Price made 17 saves for his first shutout of the season and the 49th of his 14-year career.

Tomas Tatar also scored and Paul Byron and Phillip Danault each had two assists for the Canadiens, who were playing for the first time since March 20 after having to pause all activities after Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia were placed in the COVID-19 protocol on March 22.

Blackhawks 2, Hurricanes 1

Dylan Strome and Alex DeBrincat scored 3:33 apart in the second period and Kevin Lankinen made 31 saves as host Chicago edged Carolina for its third win in five games.

Carolina outshot Chicago 32-16 but was unable to capitalize as its three-game winning streak ended. The Hurricanes went 10-2-2 in March.

Andrei Svechnikov scored for Carolina, and Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 14 shots.

Predators 3, Stars 2 (OT)

Rookie Eeli Tolvanen scored the overtime winner and added an assist to lead host Nashville past Dallas in overtime.

Roman Josi and Calle Jarnkrok also scored for Nashville, which is riding a six-game winning streak. Goaltender Juuse Saros stopped 33 shots to give the Predators their eighth win in nine games.

Jason Robertson and Roope Hintz replied for the Stars, and goalie Anton Khudobin made 23 saves. Miro Heiskanen collected two assists for Dallas, which has just one win in its past six games.
