The Mount Pulaski Hilltoppers beat
Tri-City/Sangamon Valley 15-0 last Tuesday behind a great
pitching performance by Evan Cooper. Cooper allowed just one hit
and struck out eight batters in the three-inning game.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by
Grant Davis, the Hilltoppers offense exploded for nine runs in
the second inning. A.J. Bailey had an RBI single in the second
inning to start the scoring. Evan Cooper’s single drove in two
runs for the Hilltoppers. Cooper came around to score the
Hilltoppers fifth run on an error by the shortstop. Landon Smith
added an RBI double that scored Drew Martin. Smith came around
to score another Mount Pulaski run on a passed ball. Davis added
an RBI single and then he advanced bases via errors and scored
on a wild pitch. An RBI double by Clay Aylesworth completed the
big inning for the Hilltoppers.
The score was 10-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning.
Cooper struck out the side on nine pitches in the second inning.
The Hilltoppers put the game away in the top of the third
inning, scoring five runs. Landon Smith added another RBI single
to his stat sheet. Davis batted in two runs on a line drive to
center. Garrett Fitzpatrick doubled to center to drive in
another run. Cooper drove in the final run of the game on a
single to right field.
In the Tornadoes half of the third inning they did manage a hit.
A two-out double off Cooper was all the offense the Tornadoes
had on the day. Cooper managed three more strikeouts in the
inning and Mount Pulaski won easily by a final of 15-0.
The Hilltoppers improve to 4-0 on the season.
