The result ended the Cardinals' winning streak,
which reached six games after St. Louis took the first game of
the twin bill 4-1.
In Game 2, Mets manager Luis Rojas deployed reliever Miguel
Castro for one scoreless inning as his opener before turning to
Jordan Yamamoto for 2 2/3 innings. Yamamoto (1-0) earned the
victory by allowing one run on four hits with no walks and one
strikeout.
Losing pitcher Johan Oviedo (0-1) gave up four runs on five hits
in four innings. He finished with two strikeouts and no walks.
The Mets broke out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Dominic
Smith led off with a single and raced to third on Pillar's
double. Oviedo retired Villar and Jose Peraza on fly balls, but
a wild pitch scored Smith, and Nido then ripped a two-run homer.
The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the second. Ali
Sanchez hit a two-out double, but he was thrown out easily while
trying to score on Oviedo's single.
Villar's solo homer in the fourth inning put the Mets up 4-0.
The Cardinals cut the deficit to three in the bottom of the
inning. Tyler O'Neill was hit by a pitch leading off, and he
stole second base and moved to third on a groundout. Dylan
Carlson drove him in with a two-out pinch single.
The Mets pushed their lead to 6-1 in the fifth inning. Pillar
lined a RBI single into right field, and Villar followed with a
run-scoring infield single.
The Cardinals got within 6-2 in the sixth inning when Harrison
Bader hit a double and scored on Justin Williams' pinch single.
The Mets tacked on another run in the seventh inning on Pillar's
RBI grounder.
