Lincoln played at Heyworth on Wednesday afternoon and after
the Lady Railers tied the game in the seventh inning to
force extras, the Hornets scored the winning run in the
bottom of the ninth inning to win the game 4-3.
Heyworth scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on a
ground out to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Railers loaded the bases in the third inning but
only managed to plate one run. Emily Paulus walked to
leadoff the inning and Abbie Glenn and Cara Farnam hit
back-to-back singles to load the bases for Ryen
Stoltzenburg. A ground out by Stoltzenburg scored a run to
tie the game 1-1. After Mya Kirgan walked, the bases were
loaded again for Malena Kirgan. She hit into a double play
to end the inning.
Heyworth recaptured the lead in the bottom of the third
inning on an RBI ground out and an RBI single. The 3-1 score
held until the top of the seventh inning.
Lincoln started the seventh inning with Paulus reaching on
an error and Glenn slugging a single to left field. Farnam
then singled to right to score Paulus. Stoltzenburg grounded
out to first and Glenn was able to score the tying run. The
Hornets retired the next two batters and Farnam was left
stranded at third.
With the game knotted 3-3 the Hornets batted in the bottom
of the seventh inning. Farnam was able to retire the Hornets
on three ground outs, so the game headed to extra innings.
Neither team was a threat to score until the bottom of the
ninth inning. Heyworth started the inning with a single to
right field. That runner was thrown out trying to steal
second. The next batter singled for Heyworth and advanced to
second on a ground out. With two outs, Lincoln was nearly
out of the inning. But on a ground ball to second, the
batter would reach on an error and the baserunner came
flying home on, safe on another error to end the game.
The Hornets sting the Lady Railers with a 4-3 walk-off win
in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Cara Farnam suffered the loss and pitched eight and
two-thirds innings for Lincoln. She allowed four runs, only
one earned run. She had six strikeouts and issued one walk.
The Lady Railers defense committed six errors in the field.
Emma Slayback was the winning pitcher for Heyworth. She
tossed nine innings and struck out seven Lady Railers. She
gave up three runs on nine hits.
Heyworth committed two errors in the field.
Lincoln outhit the Hornets 9-7.
Cara Farnam was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Glenn was 2-for-5 with
a run scored. Mya Kirgan was 2-for-3. Emily Paulus and Chloe
Johnston each had a hit for the Lady Railers.
Lincoln falls to 6-10 on the season.
The Lady Railers host Williamsville on Monday. First pitch
is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
