Happ had three hits, scored twice and knocked
in two more runs. Matt Duffy also scored two runs and David Bote
added an RBI double for the Cubs, who won two contests of the
three-game series.
Detroit's Matthew Boyd (2-4) gave up five runs (four earned)
while striking out eight in six innings. Harold Castro led the
offense with two hits and scored the Tigers' lone run.
The Tigers had two runners in the first inning but Hendricks got
out of the jam as Nomar Mazara tapped into a double play.
The Cubs got on the board in the third inning as Happ slapped a
one-out single and Willson Contreras walked. Kris Bryant then
hit a bouncer to second, which forced Contreras at second but
the Tigers couldn't turn a double play. Happ kept running and
scored after first baseman Jonathan Schoop threw wildly to home
plate.
Chicago made it 2-0 in the fourth inning. Duffy was hit by a
pitch before Boyd retired the next two batters, but Nico Hoerner
reached on an error. Happ then hit a blooper that dropped in
shallow center field as Duffy scored.
The Cubs extended the lead to 5-0 in the sixth inning. Duffy
reached on an infield single and Bote then ripped an RBI double
down the left-field line and advanced to third on the throw
home.
One out later, Hoerner brought home Bote with a sacrifice fly.
Happ followed with an opposite-field blast for his third homer
of the season.
Hendricks was removed in the ninth inning after giving up
back-to-back singles to Harold Castro and Miguel Cabrera.
With Dan Winkler in the game, Mazara hit into a fielder's
choice. Schoop then bounced into what was originally called a
game-ending double play. Upon review, it was determined Schoop
was safe at first, ending the shutout bid.
Winkler struck out Nico Goodrum to finish off Chicago's victory.
