Mount Pulaski played at Delavan on Wednesday
afternoon and with senior Drew Martin on the mound tossing a
perfect game, the Hilltoppers beat the Panthers 3-0.
Martin had five strikeouts in the first two innings versus
Delavan.
In the top of the fifth inning Martin put the Hilltoppers on the
board with an RBI double to right. Mount Pulaski would take a
2-0 lead in the inning after Evan Cooper scored on a wild pitch.
Cooper added an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning to put
Mount Pulaski ahead 3-0.
Martin continued to sit the batters down in order in the bottom
of the seventh inning. He recorded two ground outs and then a
fly ball to center caught by Gavin Smith ended the game -
perfectly.
Mount Pulaski takes the 3-0 win over Delavan behind a
spectacular pitching performance from Drew Martin.
After the perfect game, Mount Pulaski head coach Joel Washko
said, “Drew truly had a historic performance today on the mound.
It is incredibly difficult to achieve a perfect game at any
level. He did a great job of spotting his fastball and was
putting the ball where he wanted all game. He also got some
great support from his defense. We made a few nice plays in the
field including a great stretch by Grant Davis at first for the
second out in the seventh inning to preserve the perfect game.
Drew has worked extremely hard to pitch at a high level. We saw
today another example of where that hard work has got him.”
Martin threw 90 pitches in the game, 60 of them for strikes. He
struck out 11 Panthers in seven innings, facing the minimum 21
batters. Martin allowed no hits, no runs and there were no
errors in the game.
Evan Cooper led the Hilltoppers offense. Cooper was 2-for-4 with
an RBI and a run scored. Drew Martin, Garrett Fitzpatrick and
Grant Davis each had hits for Mount Pulaski.
The Hilltoppers remain undefeated with a 12-0 record.
Mount Pulaski will host Cerro Gordo/Bement today at 4:30 p.m.
Congratulations, Drew, on achieving this extremely rare feat!!
