Ryan Getzlaf's milestone assist lifts Ducks over Canadiens

[November 01, 2021] Troy Terry scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period on a milestone assist by Ryan Getzlaf as the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon in Anaheim, Calif.

Getzlaf picked up the primary assist on Terry's goal for his 989th career point with the Ducks, breaking the franchise record set by Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne.

With the score tied 2-2, Terry took Getzlaf's no-look backhand touch pass in the neutral zone and then broke in and beat Sam Montembeault with a backhand shot for his fifth goal in six games. The Ducks then mobbed Getzlaf in the right corner while the Honda Center crowd responded with a standing ovation.

Montreal pulled Montembeault with 2:15 remaining and Sam Carrick sealed it with an empty-netter with 1:10 to go.

Adam Henrique had a goal and an assist and Vinni Lettieri also scored a goal for Anaheim, which snapped a six-game winless streak. Kevin Shattenkirk and Cam Fowler each added a pair of assists while John Gibson made 16 saves.

Mike Hoffman and Jake Evans scored goals for Montreal. Montembeault finished with 22 saves.

The two teams exchanged power-play goals early in the first period. Henrique scored the first to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead, taking Shattenkirk's pass from the left corner in the low slot and firing a wrist shot under Montembeault's right arm for his fourth goal of the season.

Hoffman then made it 1-1 just 33 seconds later with his fourth goal of the season, one-timing a shot from the right point off a Chris Wideman feed.

Midway through the period, Montreal's Cedric Paquette picked up a five-minute major and was ejected for boarding Trevor Zegras with a hard check between the numbers along the right corner dasher boards. However, the Ducks managed just one goal, a one-timer by Lettieri from the right faceoff dot off Henrique's cross-ice feed that went past Montembeault's glove side.

Henrique, who extended his goal streak to three straight games, missed a chance at two more scores, hitting the crossbar late in the first period and then deflecting a shot off the goal post early in the second period.

Montreal tied it 2-2 at the 18:05 mark of the second period when Evans jammed in a bouncing rebound of a Jeff Petry blast from the high slot. It marked Evans' first goal of the season.
