[November 03, 2021] Former
U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem plans to be back in action in time
for the 2022 Australian Open.
The 28-year-old Austrian has been sidelined by a right wrist injury
since June.
"I am very happy to announce that my recovery is going well," Thiem
posted Tuesday on Twitter. "The MRI I did today showed that my wrist
injury has improved significantly. ... My team and I strongly
believe that I'll be ready to make my comeback to competition later
this year."
Thiem plans to compete at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in
Abu Dhabi in December, then return to the ATP Tour for the
Australian Open in January.

Thiem sustained a detachment of the posterior
sheath of the ulnar side of the wrist during a first-round match at
the Mallorca Championships in June. He announced in August that he
would miss the remainder of the season.
The 2020 U.S. Open champion is currently ranked No. 12 in the world.
Thiem also confirmed that he has been vaccinated for COVID-19.
