Lincoln invaded by strange characters and creatures on Saturday morning

[November 02, 2021]     Saturday morning the city of Lincoln was invaded by a wide variety of characters, some shady and demonic, some cute and cuddly, all in search of the ultimate prize, a bag or basket filled with candy.

Lincoln Mayor Tracy Welch hosted the annual Trick or Treat with the Mayor downtown with help from his wife Annette, who is a member of the Logan County Board.

This year, Welch chose to maintain the same safety precautions for children and shop owners due to coronavirus.

The first stop of the day was at Latham Park in Lincoln, where the Welch’s greeted children in costume, handed out candy and gave parents a map of all the locations where children could find those coveted treats.

Parents took the maps and contemplated briefly where to begin. Some chose to start with the Lincoln Parents Center and then on to Abe’s Carmelcorn, the Rio Grande and Sir Renna Tea. Others decided to go another route, starting with Pink Shutter then moving on to either Broadway to visit Sorrento’s, Copper Penny, Mary Todd Hallmark and Flossie & Delzena’s. Some chose to take McLean Street from Pink Shutter to the Lincoln Arts Institute and Michelle Bauer Country Financial.

All along the way, shop owners were delighted with the number of children that were out and about. They handed out a wide variety of candy and also a few non-edible gifts to each child that came along.

All the children enjoyed taking a break from the march around town to enjoy games and activities hosted by the Mission Community Church. Pastor Mike Lake at the church enjoyed being part of the fun and dressed like a happy friendly (not the creepy kind) clown. Church member Terri McEntire dressed up as a referee and was enjoying blowing her whistle at the kids, and making sure everyone was directed into the play area.

Many of the adults handing out treats also enjoyed dressing up for the occasion. Kathie Williams of Small Town Creations enjoyed showing off her “ET” costume. Joe Ryan took on the persona of a football player, while the ladies at Doggie Styles took up residency as the town’s witchy sisters.

All around the town, it appeared that the adults were having just as much fun as the kids. The event began at the park at 10 a.m. with expectations that by noon all the trick or treaters would have made it around town. With bags and buckets heavy laden with treats and toys, most all the children went home with happy memories and satisfied that there would be plenty of treats on hand for them to enjoy for the next few days.
