 The goal of the agreement was to strengthen the
communities of both Ys, while enhancing the Y’s services and
programs now and into the future. The YMCA of Springfield and the
Lincoln Area YMCA have now merged their operations.
The leadership from the two organizations have been working together
to create a seamless transition that will allow for YMCA programs
and services to expand in the city of Lincoln and its neighboring
communities. Officials of the two groups said the merger benefits
both organizations through the combining of staff, volunteers,
facilities, and resources which will enhance the Ys ability to
respond to each community’s pressing needs. Angie Sowle, chief
executive officer, YMCA of Springfield said, “We are excited to see
all the work come to fruition for our communities. Both associations
have strong reputations, a solid membership base and great staff. We
look forward to seeing what value we can add to our memberships and
how we can strengthen our communities by combining forces.”
In early October, Lincoln staff moved from the storefront on
Broadway Street to the YAC (Youth Activity Center) at 719 Wyatt Ave.
With help from the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, updates and
improvements have been made to the building. [to top of second

Memberships will be sold and will provide members access to new
fitness equipment, weights, and the gymnasium. A grand opening of this building
will take place later this year.
The YMCA and Lincoln Memorial Hospital continue to move forward
with the “Advance the Mission” capital campaign with the intention to build a
new YMCA in the future. Dolan Dalpoas, YMCA board member and Lincoln Memorial
Hospital president and chief executive officer, said, “Whether the Y is
providing affordable afterschool care, teaching kids a new skill, or providing a
place for residents to feel welcomed and engaged, I continue to be amazed by the
impact this organization has had on our community. Because of this, we will
continue to work towards our goal of opening a full-facility YMCA in this
community.”
