ATP roundup: Casper Ruud reaches San Diego quarters

[October 01, 2021] Second-seeded Casper Ruud, playing his first match of the event, downed Andy Murray 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the San Diego Open.

 


Ruud, who received a first-round bye, converted five of his six break-point opportunities while Murray went 3-for-5 in a match that lasted just under two hours.

Next up for Ruud is a matchup with Italy's Lorenzo Sonego, who beat the United States' Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-3 in a second-round match.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were fourth-seeded Denis Shapovalov of Canada, Cameron Norrie of Great Britain, Aslan Karatsev of Russia and Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria.

Shapovalov took advantage of Taylor Fritz squandering six set points in the opening set to win 7-6 (7), 6-2. Karatsev upset fifth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, and Norrie got past eighth-seeded countryman Daniel Evans 7-6 (3), 6-3. Dimitrov routed Denmark's August Holmgren 6-1, 6-1.

Sofia Open

Marcos Giron of the United States pulled off the day's biggest upset, edging third-seeded Alex De Minaur of Australia 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) in the second round at Sofia, Bulgaria.

Giron won the first six points of the second tiebreaker to pull away for the win. His quarterfinal foe will be eighth-seeded John Millman of Australia, a 5-7, 7-6 (0), 6-3 winner over Ukraine's Illya Marchenko.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were top-seeded Jannik Sinner of Italy, second-seeded Gael Monfils of France, fifth-seeded Filip Krajinovic of Serbia and Australia's James Duckworth. Monfils got a walkover victory when Belarus' Ilya Ivashka was unable to compete.
