It took the 33-year-old journeyman just 77 minutes to put away
the 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime, who was a semifinalist last
month at the U.S. Open. Auger-Aliassime recorded seven aces but
also committed seven double faults.
The score was tied at 2-2 in the second set when Ramos-Vinolas
broke Auger-Aliassime's serve. He did it again later in the set
en route to wrapping up his big victory.
Ramos-Vinolas will next face 29th-seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili of
Georgia, who won his match later Sunday.
Third-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany hammered 12 aces while
posting a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over American Jenson Brooksby.
Fifth-seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini racked up 11 aces without
a single double fault while registering a 6-4, 7-5 win over
Alejandro Tabilo of Chile. Great Britain's Andy Murray saved
eight of 10 break points while rallying past 30th-seeded
Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Alcaraz had 36 winners to Murray's 18 but the 18-year-old
committed 42 errors to Murray's 29.
"He's obviously got so much potential, so much firepower and
these conditions it's not easy to finish points off quickly, but
he's able to because he has so much pace from the back of the
court so I had to fight extremely hard, coming back from a set
down," Murray said afterward. "I felt like in the second set he
played maybe better.
"First set I felt like I had more of the opportunities but
didn't get it so yeah, happy with the way I fought. He's a
top-drawer young player." No. 2 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of
Greece disposed of Spain's Pedro Martinez 6-2, 6-4 in a later
match Sunday.
Italy's Jannik Sinner, seeded 10th, defeated Australia's John
Millman 6-2, 6-2; 12th-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta was a
6-1, 6-4 winner over qualifier Emilio Gomez of Ecuador, and
13th-seeded Cristian Garin of Chile defeated American qualifier
Ernesto Escobedo 7-5, 6-2.
France's Gael Monfils, seeded 14th, was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over
Italy's Gianluca Mager. South Africa's Kevin Anderson outlasted
17th-seeded Italian Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (7), 7-6 (3).
No. 22 Alex de Minaur posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory over qualifier
Aleksandar Vukic in an all-Australian matchup; No. 25 Fabio
Fognini of Italy recorded a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Germany's
Jan-Lennard Struff, and 31st-seeded Taylor Fritz beat fellow
American Brandon Nakashima 6-3, 6-4.
Russia's Karen Khachanov, the 24th-seed, knocked off Finland's
Emil Ruusuvuori 6-2, 7-5; Basilashvili defeated American
Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 6-3.
The 20th seed, American John Isner, defeated Yoshihito Nishioka
of Japan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
