Obituary
Dolores Irene (Lori) Rohrer Ohmes
died May 20, 2021 of natural causes. Lori was born
November 8, 1928, in Lincoln, to John Edward Rohrer
and Catherine Irene Knecht Rohrer, and was the
youngest of three children. She is survived by her
four children: Christopher John Ohmes (Catherine),
Kathleen Mary Filak, the twins Mary Elizabeth Kwast
(Daniel) and Margaret Ann Ohmes, four grandchildren
and two great grandchildren.
Lori grew up on a family farm without electricity or
running water, learned to drive a tractor at the age
of 8, tended to and loved the farm animals, studied
and taught the younger children in a one-room school
house, and was voted President of her class at
Lincoln Community High School. She was the first in
her family to obtain a college degree, earning a
degree in Journalism from Marquette University.
After working as a journalist in Minneapolis, MN,
she married Robert Louis Ohmes, and started a family
there. Shortly thereafter, the family relocated to
Milwaukee, WI and expanded.
Five years after losing her mother to breast cancer,
and with her children not yet in high school, Lori
was diagnosed with breast cancer and fought it off.
When she returned to the work force in the 1970s,
she worked with 4C For Children, a non-profit entity
dedicated to improving the quality of day care and
early childhood education for pre- school children.
She rose to become their Executive Director and
received numerous awards from the state of
Wisconsin, Milwaukee County and the City of
Milwaukee in recognition of her work.
She remained briefly in Milwaukee after she retired,
then moved to Las Vegas, NV, and finally settled in
Phoenix, AZ. She took college classes in all of
these places, studying and writing about a wide
range of topics. |
Through it all, she was intellectually
curious, loved to sing and dance, cherished the time spent
with family, and was good company.
She died as she lived, peacefully and sustained by her deep
faith.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Friday,
September 3rd at Holy Family Church, 316
S. Logan Street, Lincoln. Burial will be at Holy Cross
Cemetery.
