"Nobody else got any reps with the ones (first-stringers) and
Jalen's known, 'Hey, nobody else has gotten any reps with the
ones but me,'" first-year Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. "Jalen's
our starter. ... I consistently saw a player that got better
every single day."
The Eagles traded a conditional sixth-round pick in the 2022
draft to the Jaguars to acquire Minshew, who played in 23 games
(20 starts) in his first two NFL seasons but had no future in
Jacksonville after Trevor Lawrence came to town.
Three quarterbacks -- Hurts, Minshew and Joe Flacco -- made the
Eagles' initial 53-man roster after Tuesday's cutdown deadline.
As a rookie in 2020, Hurts took over for a slumping Carson Wentz
late in the season and made four starts, going 1-3. He appeared
in 15 games, often playing in special, run-focused packages, and
finished the year with 1,061 passing yards, six touchdown
passes, four interceptions and three rushing scores.
Tuesday was the first time Sirianni committed to Hurts as his
opening-day starter.
"Jalen will be our starter, and he's earned that right with a
great preseason and we've got a lot of confidence in him and in
that room in general," Sirianni said.
Hurts did not participate in the Eagles' final two preseason
games. He came down with a stomach infection the day of the Aug.
19 game against the New England Patriots and was sent to the
hospital as a precaution. He also did not play in wet conditions
in the Eagles' preseason finale against the New York Jets in
East Rutherford, N.J., on Friday.
The Eagles open the regular season Sept. 12 at the Atlanta
Falcons.
