MLB roundup: Jays outslug A's, earn walk-off 11-10 win

[September 04, 2021] Marcus Semien hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a come-from-behind win, 11-10 win over the visiting Oakland A's on Friday.

Mark Canha had hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the ninth against Jordan Romano (7-1) to take a 10-8 lead. The Blue Jays had scored six in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Sergio Romo (1-1) allowed Breyvic Valera's single and George Springer's double to open the inning before Semien hit his 34th homer of the season.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s third career grand slam -- all coming this year -- capped Toronto's eighth-inning rally.

Giants 3, Dodgers 2 (11 innings)

Second baseman Trea Turner's errant throw allowed Brandon Belt to score the game-winning run with two outs in the 11th inning as San Francisco opened its showdown series with visiting Los Angeles with a walk-off victory.

The Giants regained a one-game lead over the Dodgers atop the National League West, with two more head-to-heads remaining this weekend.

Jarlin Garcia (6-3), the sixth Giants pitcher, was credited with the win after pitching a scoreless top of the 11th. The winning uprising came after the Dodgers, down 1-0, forced extra innings thanks to a two-out RBI single by Chris Taylor in the ninth.

Mariners 6, Diamondbacks 5 (10 innings)

Jarred Kelenic hit a two-run homer and singled home the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning as Seattle defeated Arizona in Phoenix.

Mitch Haniger also socked a two-run home run for the Mariners, won their third straight game and remained four games back in the chase for the American League's second and final wild-card berth. The Mariners improved to 13-5 in extra innings this season.

The Diamondbacks, who have the worst record in the National League, fell for the sixth time in seven games despite two hits and two RBIs by Nick Ahmed.

Royals 7, White Sox 2

Michael A. Taylor and Andrew Benintendi each had three hits as host Kansas City defeated Chicago in a game that started more than two hours late due to a rainstorm.

Taylor drove in three runs as the Royals snapped a four-game losing streak. After the rain delay, the Royals scored as many runs in the first five innings Friday (seven) as they did in the preceding three-game sweep by the Cleveland Indians.

White Sox third baseman Yoan Moncada extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a third-inning single. Chicago's Dallas Keuchel (8-8) gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits in three-plus innings.

Angels 3, Rangers 2

Shohei Ohtani allowed only a two-run homer while throwing a career-high 117 pitches over seven innings, and Los Angeles edged Texas at Anaheim, Calif.

Ohtani (9-1), the AL MVP front-runner, allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out eight, but he was hurt only by Jason Martin's tying, two-run shot in the second inning.

Nick Solak had three hits for the Rangers, who have dropped their past three road contests. Martin finished with two hits.

Astros 6, Padres 3

Kyle Tucker slugged a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning to help Houston post a victory over host San Diego in the opener of a three-game series.

Carlos Correa contributed a three-run blast for Houston, which increased its lead in the American League West to 5 1/2 games over the second-place Oakland Athletics.

Padres right-hander Jake Arrieta (hamstring) was activated from the injured list prior to the game and allowed three runs and three hits in five innings in his second start since joining San Diego. The setback was the 15th in the past 20 games for the Padres, who trail the Cincinnati Reds by a half-game for the National League's second wild-card spot.

Yankees 4, Orioles 3 (11 innings)

Giancarlo Stanton hit a game-ending single to open the 11th inning and New York outlasted visiting Baltimore.

DJ LeMahieu hit a game-tying single in the 10th but was stranded at third when Dillon Tate retired Aaron Judge. The Yankees finally won it when Stanton hit a 2-1 sinker up the middle to score Judge from second.

Stanton homered earlier, while the Orioles got homers from Trey Mancini and Jorge Mateo.

Cardinals 15, Brewers 4

In their 300th career start together, Adam Wainwright allowed one earned run and catcher Yadier Molina hit a grand slam as visiting St. Louis beat Milwaukee.

Wainwright and Molina became the fourth battery in major league history to reach that milestone, joining Mickey Lolich and Bill Freehan (324 games), Warren Spahn and Del Crandall (316) and Red Faber and Ray Schalk (306).

Wainwright (14-7) beat the Brewers for the 19th time while allowing four hits and three walks in 6 1/3 innings.

Mets 6, Nationals 2 (10 innings)

Pete Alonso hit a leadoff RBI single in the 10th inning to spark a four-run outburst for visiting New York, which avoided a potentially ugly defeat by beating Washington.

The Mets overcame a blown save in the ninth inning by Edwin Diaz to win their fifth straight and climb back to .500. The Nationals have lost six straight and 10 of 12.

Rich Hill tossed six scoreless innings and Michael Conforto and Alonso each had RBI hits to help the Mets carry a 2-0 lead into the ninth, but Juan Soto homered and Riley Adams later hit a game-tying double.

Rays 5, Twins 3

Michael Wacha won for the first time in nearly two months as first-place Tampa Bay broke its two-game losing streak, defeating Minnesota in St. Petersburg, Fla.

After going 0-2 with an 8.49 ERA in five August starts, Wacha (3-4) surrendered solo homers to Jorge Polanco and Ryan Jeffers, plus a double to Max Kepler, over his six innings.

The right-hander struck out seven with no walks and won for the first time since July 7 in an 8-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Austin Meadows notched two of the six hits for the Rays, who are 39-14 against clubs with losing records.

Red Sox 8, Indians 5

Kyle Schwarber delivered a tiebreaking, two-run double in the seventh inning and had three RBIs as Boston outlasted visiting Cleveland to open a three-game series.

Schwarber (2-for-5) also clubbed a solo blast for his 150th career home run. Hunter Renfroe added a three-run homer in the seventh and Kevin Plawecki and Jonathan Arauz each had solo shots for Boston, which has won three straight and eight of 12 games overall.

Austin Hedges hit a two-run homer and Jose Ramirez had a solo shot and two RBIs for Cleveland. Indians starter Cal Quantrill (4-3) allowed five runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- over six-plus innings.

Tigers 15, Reds 5

Dustin Garneau hit two of Detroit's season-high-tying five home runs as the Tigers overpowered host Cincinnati.

Garneau drove in three runs. Detroit's Jeimer Candelario had a homer, two doubles and a single while scoring four runs and driving in two. Jonathan Schoop also supplied four hits, including a solo homer, while scoring three runs. Robbie Grossman added a three-run blast.

Jonathan India and Eugenio Suarez homered for the Reds. Cincinnati starter Vladimir Gutierrez (9-6) gave up four runs, three earned, in 3 1/3 innings.

Rockies 4, Braves 3

C.J. Cron drove in the deciding run to back the solid pitching of Antonio Senzatela as Colorado defeated Atlanta in Denver.

In the sixth, Cron lined a single to left to score Trevor Story, who began the rally with a two-out double. Senzatela (4-9) pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on six hits, striking out three.

Huascar Ynoa (4-5) pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on five hits for the Brave, who have lost four of their past five.

Cubs 6, Pirates 5

Frank Schwindel hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth inning as Chicago earned a victory over visiting Pittsburgh to extend its winning streak to four games.

Michael Hermosillo also homered for the Cubs. Both Schwindel and Hermosillo had three hits each out of the top two spots in the Chicago order and had a combined five RBIs.

Anthony Alford hit a pair of home runs for the Pirates, who have dropped four consecutive games in Chicago after playing the White Sox earlier this week. Pittsburgh has dropped six of its past seven games overall.

Marlins 10, Phillies 3

Miguel Rojas had a pair of RBI singles during a seven-run, tiebreaking sixth inning, leading host Miami over Philadelphia.

The Phillies had their six-game win streak snapped. Philadelphia's 11-game win streak over division opponents also ended. It was the longest such run in the majors since 2017.

Prior to Friday, the Phillies had scored at least seven runs in seven straight games, the first time the franchise accomplished that feat since 1933.
