MLB roundup: Jays win as Yanks' Gerrit Cole (hamstring) exits

Marcus Semien continued his home run binge with a solo shot, Alejandro Kirk homered twice and the visiting Toronto Blue Jays extended their winning streak to six games Tuesday with a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees, who lost ace Gerrit Cole to a hamstring injury.

The Blue Jays won for the ninth time in 10 games. Semien connected in the fifth after Cole left in the fourth with left hamstring tightness. It was Semien's career-high 38th homer and sixth in as many games this month.

Toronto's Steven Matz (11-7) allowed one run on seven hits in six innings to tie a career-high for wins.

Cole (14-7) gave up three runs (two earned) and five hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Rays 12, Red Sox 7

Nelson Cruz and Mike Zunino each homered twice and had four RBIs to lead visiting Tampa Bay to a rout of Boston.

Jordan Luplow added a three-run blast late and matched Zunino with three hits as the first-place Rays won for the fourth time in five games. Cruz, who went 4-for-5, reached 30 home runs for the seventh time in his past eight seasons and became the oldest player to reach the milestone.
 

Bobby Dalbec homered twice off the bench for the Red Sox, who have lost three straight. Boston has allowed at least 11 runs in each defeat.

Brewers 10, Phillies 0

Kolten Wong doubled, singled and drove in two runs to give host Milwaukee its first win of the season in six tries against Philadelphia.

Avisail Garcia ripped a two-run home run, Eduardo Escobar added a double and three RBIs and Christian Yelich had three hits and two RBIs for the Brewers. Milwaukee's Eric Lauer (5-5) tossed seven shutout innings and gave up four hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

One night after scoring 12 runs, the Phillies had only five hits. Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola (7-8) lasted five innings and allowed six hits and three runs.

Braves 8, Nationals 5

Ozzie Albies homered for the fourth straight game and drove in four runs to lift Atlanta over visiting Washington.

Albies was 2-for-3 with a walk and scored two runs. His two-run homer in the seventh inning, his 27th, broke a 5-5 tie.

Braves starter Max Fried threw six innings of one-run ball. Luke Jackson (2-2) threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the win, and Will Smith handled the ninth for his 31st save.

Dodgers 7, Cardinals 2

Justin Turner hit two homers and drove in three runs as Los Angeles won for the sixth time in its last eight games, knocking off host St. Louis.

Will Smith went 4-for-4 with a homer and two runs for the Dodgers, and former Cardinals star Albert Pujols started at first base and hit a first-inning solo home run. Alex Vesia (3-1), Los Angeles' third of nine pitchers in a bullpen game, got the victory after striking out the only batter he faced.

Nolan Arenado drove in both runs for the reeling Cardinals, who lost their fourth straight game. St. Louis starting pitcher J.A. Happ (8-8) allowed four runs on seven hits in five innings.

Giants 12, Rockies 3

Steven Duggar had two triples, a double and drove in three runs, Mike Yastrzemski homered among his two hits, and San Francisco beat Colorado in Denver.

Brandon Crawford had three hits and Tommy La Stella and Brandon Belt two apiece for the Giants, who stayed a game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

San Francisco's Logan Webb (9-3) allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out six in seven innings. He helped himself with an RBI double.

Mets 9, Marlins 4

Pete Alonso slugged his 100th career homer and added one more long ball as New York Mets defeated host Miami.

Alonso was playing in his 347th game. Only Ryan Howard (325 games) reached 100 homers faster than Alonso, who also hit No. 1 in Miami on April 1, 2019. Alonso, who has 32 homers this year, finished the night 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

Carlos Carrasco (1-2) earned his first win as a member of the Mets, allowing four runs but just one earned in five innings. He gave up seven hits and a walk while striking out four. Miami reliever Paul Campbell (1-3) took a tough loss, allowing two unearned runs in 2 1/3 innings.

Astros 5, Mariners 4 (10 innings)

Carlos Correa delivered a walk-off double leading off the 10th inning as Houston claimed a victory over visiting Seattle.

Alex Bregman hit a two-run, game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth to save the Astros. Houston's Jose Altuve hit his first homer since July 30, and Bregman and Michael Brantley contributed three hits apiece.

Kyle Seager homered for the Mariners and J.P. Crawford hit a two-run double.

Reds 4, Cubs 3

Jonathan India and Nick Castellanos connected for first-inning home runs and Wade Miley struck out eight in seven strong innings to boost visiting Cincinnati past Chicago.

The Reds snapped the Cubs' season-best, seven-game winning streak behind an early boost and a late flurry. Mike Moustakas and Kyle Farmer contributed back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the eighth inning to provide valuable insurance.

Miley (12-5) scattered one run and five hits without walking a batter. Chicago's Rafael Ortega and Ian Happ hit solo home runs in the eighth inning against Michael Lorenzen.

Pirates 3, Tigers 2

Ben Gamel's third hit of the game was a go-ahead, two-run single in the sixth inning as Pittsburgh edged visiting Detroit.

Colin Moran had a sacrifice fly in the first inning for the Pirates, who have won the first two games of the three-game series following a six-game losing streak. Pittsburgh improved to 4-1 against Detroit this season.

Pirates starter Dillon Peters, just off the injured list and making his fourth start since coming to the Pirates in a trade, pitched four innings. He gave up two runs and three hits.

Twins 3, Indians 0

John Gant recorded his first win in nearly 3 1/2 months after tossing five strong innings, lifting visiting Minnesota over Cleveland.

The Twins' Brent Rooker homered to lead off the seventh inning, and Andrelton Simmons and Luis Arraez each drove in a run. Simmons and Miguel Sano each had two of the seven hits for the Twins, who have won three in a row overall and nine of 14 contests against the Indians this season.

Cleveland's Aaron Civale (10-3) allowed one run on three hits and struck out six in 4 2/3 innings after being activated from the 60-day injured list prior to the game. He was making his first start in the majors since spraining his right middle finger on June 21.

White Sox 6, A's 3

Cesar Hernandez and Brian Goodwin stroked two-run hits, and visiting Chicago sent Oakland to its fourth straight loss.

Promoted Monday from Triple-A Charlotte, rookie Jimmy Lambert (1-1) gave up one run over five innings for his first career win. He helped the White Sox increase their lead over the second-place Cleveland Indians in the American League Central to 11 games.

Yoan Moncada and Luis Garcia each had two hits for Chicago, and Liam Hendriks tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 33rd save.

Angels 4, Padres 0

Jo Adell ended a no-hit bid by Blake Snell with a two-run single in the seventh inning, and Los Angeles then finished off a shutout of host San Diego.

Snell brought a perfect game into the seventh inning before issuing two walks. After both runners moved up on stolen bases, Adell lined a two-out, two-strike pitch just out of the reach of diving shortstop Jake Cronenworth, ending the no-hitter and breaking the scoreless tie.

Snell (7-6) departed after allowing two runs and one hit in seven innings, striking out 11 and walking two. Angels left-hander Packy Naughton threw five shutout innings in his second major league start. Jimmy Herget (2-1), Steve Cishek and Raisel Iglesias finished up.

Orioles 7, Royals 3

Austin Hays extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a two-run homer as host Baltimore defeated Kansas City for its third win in four games.

Cedric Mullins and DJ Stewart also went deep for the Orioles. Mike Baumann, recalled from Triple-A Norfolk earlier in the day, allowed only an unearned run in 3 2/3 innings of relief for the win in his major league debut.

Carlos Santana homered for the Royals, who had won three of four. Kansas City's Nicky Lopez and Edward Olivares had two hits apiece. Jackson Kowar (0-3) allowed six runs in six innings for the Royals. He struck out seven.

Rangers 3, Diamondbacks 1

Spencer Howard and Jordan Lyles combined to allow just three hits and Jason Martin hit a two-run single as Texas beat Arizona in Phoenix.

Lyles (8-11) allowed one run over seven innings in relief of starter Howard, who tossed two perfect innings in his return from the COVID-19 injured list. The Rangers have won three straight and six of their past nine games.

Arizona starter Zac Gallen (2-9) allowed three runs on six hits over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight with no walks.
