The ‘Panda’ classroom at Christian Child Care learned “where our
food comes from” last Thursday. Sara Harvey, teacher of the Panda’s
class (four and five year olds) took the students outside to sit on
the lawn at a safe distance from the cornfield behind the facility.
Soon the ‘oooh!!’ and ‘wow!!’ comments flowed as they watched the
grain empty from the combine into the truck and wagons waiting along
the edge of the field along Home Avenue.
As it finished unloading the class was surprised to see a farmer
striding across the lawn from the field to the children! Yes, this
busy farmer with a long days/weeks schedule ahead of him was taking
time to meet with and talk with these young people!

The farmer, Mark Luken spent a good length of time with them talking
about the corn, the combine and anything you know children ask. Ms.
Harvey said she felt that farmer Luken enjoyed the time as much as
the children did.
The lesson was not over. Back in the classroom the class made their
own ‘rows of corn’ using gift-wrap paper tubes, bubble wrap and
tissue. They lined the wall along the classroom with their crop.
Perhaps we have a few future farmers/farmerettes in the Panda class!
A trip to the finished field may give them some real leaves to add
to their creation later.
“Thank you Mark Luken and all the other farmers who feed America!”
