Elkhart Historical Society Dinner Lecture Series presents "The Borer War" April 22nd

The Elkhart Historical Society invites those with horticulture and arborist interests to attend a dinner lecture on Friday evening, April 22, 2022, 5:30 p.m., at the Horsefeather’s/Wild Hare Café, 104 Gov. Oglesby St., in Elkhart, with guest lecturer Guy Sternberg. He will be addressing the subject of “The Borer War,” as it affects the survival of the American ash tree species.

Sternberg has cultivated and studied trees since 1952. He served on the staff of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for 32 years, receiving the Honor Award for outstanding service. He has been granted an adjunct research appointment to the Illinois State Museum Botany Department and an adjunct faculty position in Biology at Illinois College. He holds numerous other botany/horticulture and arboretum memberships and has received many lifetime achievement awards in natural resources.

He will answer the question, “Is there an American ash species that might survive the Emerald Ash Borer without perpetual help?” Come and learn about a breakthrough project that includes an investment of many thousands of dollars to bring some of the finest trees in central Illinois back to good health. Be on the front end of this effort, and learn of its success before it appears in a scientific journal in a couple of years.

Sternberg lectures frequently for various colleges, trade and professional organizations. He teaches master naturalist classes and is very active in the preservation of historic trees. He has traveled worldwide studying trees and their habitats, and has participated in educational exchanges throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. He was the author and photographer of Landscaping with Native Trees in 1995, and prepared a 550-page sequel to that volume titled Native Trees for North American Landscapes, released in 2004. His newest book, Native Trees of North America, was published in 2021.
