PORTA edges Mount Pulaski 3-2

[April 08, 2022] The Hilltoppers suffered their first loss of the season on  Wednesday afternoon in Petersburg, falling 3-2 to the Blue Jays in seven innings.

 

Mount Pulaski scored their only runs of the game in the top of the first inning. Evan Cooper reached base to start the game after he was hit by a pitch. After a walk to Landon Smith, Jackson Fricke singled to load the bases. A fielder’s choice hit by Gavin Smith drove in the Hilltoppers first run. Courtesy runner Kolin Gibbs scored the Hilltoppers second run on a wild pitch. 

 

The Hilltoppers 2-0 lead was intact until the bottom of the fifth inning. 

 

PORTA scored three runs in the fifth inning off starter Evan Cooper to take the 3-2 lead.

 

The Hilltoppers were retired in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

 

Evan Cooper (2-1) went the distance for Mount Pulaski on the mound. He tossed six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. Only one run was earned. Cooper struck out eight batters and did not allow a single walk. 

 

Mount Pulaski’s Jackson Fricke had the only two hits for the Mount Pulaski offense. Seven Hilltoppers struck out versus PORTA pitching.

 

The Hilltoppers record is now 6-1.
