State Senator Sally Turner (R-Beason) issued the following
statement after Democrat lawmakers passed short-term tax relief
in an election year as part of their FY23 budget, while also
increasing state spending by billions.
“This year is a year of lost opportunities. We had over $16
billion of unexpected funds to use to shore up our budget, pay
down the state’s Unemployment Insurance (UI) Trust Fund debt and
provide Illinoisans with real, long-term relief from
skyrocketing inflation and over taxation.
“Instead, we are leaving the state Capitol with a $1.8 billion
UI Trust Fund debt, increased permanent spending, and short-term
tax relief that expires after our upcoming elections.”
Sen. Turner voted in favor of the tax relief portion of the
plan, despite calling for permanent tax relief, but voted
against the state spending plan.
