Landon Smith fans a season-high 13 batters as Hilltoppers defeat Crusaders 6-1

[April 28, 2022]    Landon Smith went the distance on the mound Monday afternoon versus Springfield Lutheran/Calvary and with the Hilltoppers scoring runs in each of the first four innings, Mount Pulaski came out on top by a final score of 6-1.

 

Landon Smith (3-1) struck out a season-high 13 batters while tossing the complete game for the Hilltoppers. Smith allowed one unearned run on three hits and walked five.

 

Jackson Fricke and Liam Smith drove in the first two runs of the game for Mount Pulaski in the top of the first inning.  Fricke’s sacrifice fly scored AJ Bailey with the first run. Liam Smith added an RBI single to score Landon Smith. 

 

Kolin Gibbs and Evan Cooper drove in runs in the second inning to give Mount Pulaski a 4-0 lead. Gibbs laid down a perfect bunt to score Gavin Smith from third. Cooper’s sacrifice fly allowed Gibbs to score. 

 

Gavin Smith added an RBI single in the third inning to make the score 5-0.

 

The Crusaders scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning.

 

Jackson Fricke crushed a two-out double in the top of the fourth inning. He was replaced on the base paths by a courtesy runner, Colt Selinger. Selinger scored when Liam Smith hit a line drive to right field. 

 

Mount Pulaski went on to win the game by a final score of 6-1. 

 

The Hilltoppers stole 14 bases against the Crusaders. 

 

Liam Smith led the Hilltoppers offense. He was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run scored. 

 

AJ Bailey, Jackson Fricke, Clay Aylesworth and Gavin Smith each had one hit.

 

Mount Pulaski improved their record to 14-3 on the season.

 

The Hilltoppers will play at Hartsburg-Emden today at 4:30 p.m.
