[August 09, 2022]   You could say the Sheep Show was baaaaad to the end, with 'bad' meaning awesome. Sheep is another area in Logan County agriculture that has had years of dedicated families working to make the animals and the youth showing them the best in the state.

Judge Bailey Irick brought her years of training and expertise in raising and showing livestock with a recently completed Masters in Agricultural Business and Management from Western Illinois University to the sheep arena on Thursday.

Judge Irick noted time and again how impressive the Logan County 4-H and sheep program is, how the participants should appreciate their program and those that have made it all possible for them today. She said the dedication of all shows in the quality of the sheep and how well the exhibitors handled themselves.

Sheep being sheep, were not always well behaved under the stressful and warm conditions. One and another would act up a bit from time to time. But their handlers always quickly brought them back under control. The experience of this group of participants showed time and again, and it was duly noted by the Judge Irick.

The 4-H Sheep breeds showing this year were Southdown/Dorper, Montadale, Tunis, AOB (All other breeds) wool, AOB meat, and Commercial ewe class.

Following the 4-H and Junior Sheep Shows a potluck style lunch was provided for participating families featuring lamb brats provided by Pam and Steve Schreiner and Annie Coers coordinating.

Time for some sheepish fun

And then it was on to having some fun with Peewee Showmanship and a Costume Contest.

Any youth who wanted to get the feel of handling a sheep was loaned a sheep with a handler assisting as needed. They circled the arena and then lined up. A judge then went to each participant and sheep and explained what qualities are looked for in sheep and gave each tips on showmanship.

The final event is one greatly anticipated each year. This year's costume competition featured a radio active spider riding a sheep with its handler as Spider man, a sweet little devil with pitchfork, a professional looking Conrady Baseball Team with sheep carrying a sign "Baaaatter up," and a double wedding in the Coers' family.

Eyebrows went up and eyes widened, as smiles broke out when Beyonce's 'Single Ladies (Put a ring on it)' issued in two of the superintendents, the Coers' boys, having their moment.

The first Coers was dressed as the bride looking sleek in a shiny red dress (and not a baaaad figure) with a fake wisteria bouquet that the 'groom' sheep kept trying to eat.

Then came his brother down the sheep isle dressed as a groom with his sheep as the bride swathed in a sheer (shear) fabric veil.

Both the sheep and the human grooms were dapper wearing top hats and tuxes. Both men looked delightfully humorous, if not a little sheepish, and the sheep not so much, while posing in the center. The crowd laughed and laughed; precious moments.

Oversight of the 4-H, Junior and Open Show Sheep Shows were conducted by Superintendent John Coers, Assistant Superintendents Jim Coers, Clint Garey and Jared Coers; with Secretaries Annie Coers, Erin Coers and Mallory Garey keeping records.
